Metaphor: ReFantazio

Sogne the Icebound Boss Guide

By
Jarrod Garripoli

You will encounter many formidable foes in Metaphor: ReFantazio, otherwise known as bosses. After defeating Louis at the top of the Altabury Opera House, there will be a number of various scenes there, including some big revelations. This will push the story to you traveling to the "Mage" iconMage Academy to confront "Rella" iconRella, where she will summon Sogne the Icebound, an ice dragon, for you to fight.

Sogne the Icebound is summoned by Rella, so you’ll have to defeat it to continue.

All of Sogne the Icebound’s Attacks

There are two phases to this battle, with the first involving Rella. The second phase begins after depleting the dragon’s HP once, after which, Rella will no longer be involved in the fight.

  • Iceclaw Slash: Deals medium physical Ice damage to one character. May inflict Frostbite.

  • "Roar" iconRoar: Greatly decreases (two ranks) Attack/Defence/Hit/Evasion for all characters for 3 turns.

  • Tail Swipe: Deals weak physical Strike damage to all characters.

  • Icy Breath: Deals medium magic Ice damage to all characters. May inflict Frostbite.

  • Quartz Wall: Rella puts up a barrier on the dragon to protect it from all elemental attacks.

  • "Rakukaja" iconRakukaja: Rella buffs the defense of the dragon by one rank for three turns.

  • "Tarukaja" iconTarukaja: Rella buffs the attack of the dragon by one rank for three turns.

  • "Dekunda" iconDekunda: Removes all debuff effects from the dragon.

(1 of 6) Tail Strike will hit all of your characters for some Strike damage.

  • "Megidola" iconMegidola: Deals heavy magic Almighty damage to all characters.

  • "Mahamaon" iconMahamaon: Deals medium magic Light damage to all characters.

  • "Exorcist Light" iconExorcist Light: Deals extreme magic Light damage to one character.

  • Full Magic Transfer: After defeating the dragon once, Rella will use this to fully restore its health.

  • Draconic Wrath: The dragon will use this after Full Magic Transfer to increase its attack by two ranks.

Sogne the Icebound Boss Strategy

This is a challenging and annoying boss fight, since you’re essentially fighting two bosses at once, but you can only target one of them. Rella will join as one of the bosses, but you cannot target her at all, which is problematic, as she will belt you with spells and buff the dragon. The most troublesome thing she uses is Quartz Wall to basically nullifies any elemental attacks on Sogne. The dragon is weak to fire, but Quartz Wall will block you from utilizing it. Using a fire attack on it while Quartz Wall will dissolve it, at the cost of two Turn Icons, but Rella will just use it again on her next turn.

(1 of 4) Sogne is actually weak to Fire, so it’s good to have it.

That means you’ll need to use mostly physical attacks here to deal damage to the main boss. Of course, this can be difficult to do, since Sogne will use Roar to debuff your stats, so having Dekunda will help out a lot to get rid of those. It’s even worse when the dragon does Roar twice in a row on its turns, since that’s a guaranteed full debuff of all your stats. To make matters even worse, Iceclaw Slash and Icy Breath can both inflict the Frostbite ailment. This ailment will reduce the damage you do and despite the descriptions above saying it may inflict Frostbite, it seems to be a 100% hit rate with it.

If you have access to the "Saviour" iconSaviour class, then they learn "Pen Patra" iconPen Patra at level 5, which removes all ailments from your party. This will help a lot in controlling the Frostbite, but the ailment will just make the battle go a lot longer. The dragon can also use Tail Swipe to attack your whole party with Strike damage. For the dragon, you basically don’t want to be weak to either Ice or Strike damage, as you definitely don’t want the boss to gain more Turn Icons. Of course, you also don’t want to be weak to Light, either, as Rella will be participating, too.

Outside of the Quartz Wall mentioned above, she will buff the dragon with both Rakukaja and Tarukaja, while also removing any debuffs you put on the dragon with Dekunda. As far as attacks go, she can use both Mahamaon and Exorcist Light, both of which are Light attacks (hence no weakness to Light). She can also use Megidola, which is an Almighty type of attack, but you can’t really do anything about that, since there is no way to block its damage. If you can keep up your defenses with something like "Marakukaja" iconMarakukaja, then that will help a lot.

(1 of 3) Deplete the dragon’s health once, and Rella will use her magic to fully restore it.

Once you deplete the dragon’s health, you may think the fight is over, but it’s not just yet. Rella will use Full Magic Transfer to completely heal the dragon, and the fight will switch over to the second phase. This is mostly the same here, except Rella won’t be doing anything, so you can exploit that weakness to fire. Sogne will pretty much still do all of the same moves as before, except it does gain a single new move, Draconic Wrath. This is nothing more than it increasing its attack by two ranks, so you can either try to remove the buff or just deal with it.

After the fight is over, watch the following scenes, which will bring you back to Altabury. The next plan of action is to prepare for the upcoming fight on 9/24, which will occur in Grand Trad. You now have free time until then, so you’re good to do side quests and whatever else you want until then.
