Why We Fight - FF16 Main Quest Walkthrough

By
Nathan Garvin

During the main quest Things Fall Apart you’ll be given three objectives, which branch out into three subquests. Why We Fight is one of these three subquests, which will begin when you pursue the objective Aid Northreach in its dilemma. This page will provide a walkthrough for the main subquest Why We Fight in Final Fantasy XVI, including details on how to defeat the thralls, including the Thrall Lich, near "Moore" iconMoore.

Approach !The Veil in !Northreach to start this quest.

How to Start Why We Fight Quest - FF16 Why We Fight Main Quest Walkthrough

After talking to "Otto" iconOtto for the second time in "The Hideaway" iconThe Hideaway you’ll get three objectives, which lead to three subquests of the main quest Things Fall Apart. The objective Aid Northreach in its dilemma will direct you to "Northreach" iconNorthreach in Northern Sanbreque. Once there, go north through the gate and head to "The Veil" iconThe Veil to trigger a scene. This quest starts after the scene ends.

After tracking down the Dame, you’ll need to talk to two survivors to learn where the attacks are occuring.

Thrall Lich
Thrall Revenant
Thrall Specter
Thrall Wraith

With the quest properly started, your next task is to head to the Imperial Training Grounds, where you’ll find the Dame dressing down some guards. After she’s done with them, she’ll turn her attention to you, and when the chatter is over you’ll be directed to talk to two survivors of the recent attacks. Talk to an “Injured Soldier” and a “Refugee” to learn that the attacks seem to be concentrated around the road to Moore.

Follow the road to !Moore to encounter some thralls, led by a Thrall Lich. Defeat this foe to temporarily quell the menace.

How to Defeat the Thrall Lich - FF16 Why We Fight Main Quest Walkthrough

Leave Northreach and follow the road to Moore to eventually stumble across the fell creatures the survivors warned you about. The first wave consists of numerous Thrall Revenants, while the second wave will add in Thrall Wraiths and some Thrall Specters, the latter of which will use Protect to buff their allies. Finally, when you’ve worn your way through those foes a Thrall Lich will arrive, serving as the boss for this quest. Despite the “thrall” in their name these foes - the Lich included - fight similarly to the standard counterparts, and everything that worked against normal Lichs (especially the one you fought back during Into the Darkness) will serve you well here. Namely, "Titanic Block" iconTitanic Block is excellent for most of the Lich’s scythe attacks, save for the projectile (Titanic Block will block the projectile itself, but not the AoE it leaves when it makes contact) and Thresh (each attack in Thresh is technically blockable, but it won’t stall the Lich’s attacks, making it arguably more bother than it’s worth). Other than that, it’s the standard route: deplete the enemy’s Will Gauge to 50%, hit them with "Deadly Embrace" iconDeadly Embrace and "Gouge" iconGouge away the other half of the Will Gauge, then punish them when Staggered.

Defeat the Lich and you’ll gain 55x Magicked Ash for the feat, then return to Northreach and report to the Dame and the new captain to complete this quest. This will earn you another 100x Magicked Ash and 1x Meteorite. Continue progressing through the main quest Things Fall Apart, by checking out the pages for the subquests The Flames of War and Down the Rabbit Hole.
