Final Fantasy XVI

A Hill to Die On, Fastitocalon Hunt Location and How to Beat in FF16

By
Jarrod Garripoli

"Fastitocalon" iconFastitocalon is the first Hunt that you can find in the Dhalmekian region of the map, with it becoming available after the Bolts from the Blue main quest. There are plenty of "Notorious Marks" iconNotorious Marks available for Clive to take on in Final Fantasy 16, and finding them is just the beginning. This page will show you where you can find the Fastitocalon, as well as how you can defeat it.

Fastitocalon will be the first hunt you can do in the Dhalmekian region.

Where to Find the Fastitocalon Mark Location

Location Level Bounty
The Velkroy Desert, Dhalmekian Republic 34 10,000 "Gil" iconGil, 20 Renown

You won’t be able to find this Hunt until you start the Riddle of the Sand main quest. This will be your first trek through the Dhalmekian Republic, which is a vast desert area. Once you finish up Bolts from the Blue and access your map, you will see the new location pop up on the map. Head back to "The Hideaway" iconThe Hideaway, though, and there will be a new Mark on the Hunt Board.

The Hunt Board doesn’t really give you much to go on, in terms of locations, other than The "Velkroy Desert" iconVelkroy Desert, which is a pretty large place. When you first arrive in the region, you will actually be in the area where the hunt is located. If you look at the map, there is a spot in the northeastern corner, just past The Bandit’s Bed (the little marker there). Fastitocalon will be sitting there, in its shell, in that corner.

Fastitocalon’s Attacks

Below, you’ll find all of the attacks that Fastitocalon has in its arsenal.

Attack Description Counter
Water Cannon Fastitocalon will shoot a bunch of water projectiles in a straight line. Very easy to dodge and you could use Heatwave to counter it, making it easy to damage its stagger gauge.
Slam Fastitocalon rears back on its hind legs, then slams the ground with its front legs. Attack is pretty slow, so you can easily avoid it without much trouble.
Snapping Bite Fastitocalon moves its head to one side, then sweeps across, trying to bite you. Again, this attack is fairly slow and easy to dodge.
Shell Spin Fastitocalon will hop backwards, then dash across the battlefield, spinning very fast along the way. Not hard to dodge, but you don’t want to get hit by this, as it hurts a lot.
Testudo Trompe Blue lights appear on the ground, with mini explosions coming from them. After a few moments, Fastitocalon will spin across the arena, like its Shell Spin attack. Just try to avoid the blue lights on the ground and keep an eye on the enemy, for its spin attack at the end.

Recommended Abilities for Fastitocalon

Here, we will list our recommended ability set up to complete this hunt successfully.

Eikon Ability Damage Type
Phoenix/"Ifrit" iconIfrit "Heatwave" iconHeatwave Damage (2 Stars), Will (2 Stars)
Phoenix/Ifrit "Flames of Rebirth" iconFlames of Rebirth Damage (3 Stars), Will (3 Stars)
"Garuda" iconGaruda "Gouge" iconGouge Damage (2 Stars), Will (4 Stars)
Garuda "Wicked Wheel" iconWicked Wheel Damage (2 Stars), Will (3 Stars)
"Titan" iconTitan "Lightning Rod" iconLightning Rod Damage (2 Stars), Will (3 Stars)
Titan "Raging Fists" iconRaging Fists Damage (3 Stars), Will (3 Stars)

Heatwave is good for this battle, as the enemy will use Water Cannon quite often, so you should be able to get a good counter off of that for major "Will" iconWill Gauge damage. As has been the case since you got Garuda, use "Deadly Embrace" iconDeadly Embrace to pull the beast to the ground when you partially stagger it, then you can go to town with something like Gouge or Wicked Wheel to deplete the stagger gauge more. Once you’ve fully staggered the enemy, then you can lay down a Lightning Rod and go to town with your other abilities.

Fastitocalon Boss Strategy in Final Fantasy XVI

Fastitocalon isn’t a particularly difficult hunt, mainly because a good portion of its attacks are rather slow. This is especially the case with its melee attacks, which you should never really get hit by, unless you’re trying to use a "Precision Dodge" iconPrecision Dodge or Block. You should learn the timing, though, as you should have ample opportunities for doing so. Likewise, Water Cannon is another easy move to avoid, but you gain the chance to use Heatwave to counter it and deal some great stagger damage.

Should you dodge it, you want to be careful about rushing straight in, as the attack is a little lengthy and you might go straight into the tail end, taking some damage. The Shell Spin is something you should just evade, as you don’t want to get caught up in it, since it hurts quite a bit. That’s all you’ll see until you get its health to about 50% or so. Just make sure you attack the head area, as the shell is quite tougher and will soak up more of your damage output.

(1 of 2) Gouge is always a great opener when an enemy first gets staggered.

Gouge is always a great opener when an enemy first gets staggered. (left), Once you’ve built up the multiplier, you can unleash your bigger moves. (right)

Once the health threshold mentioned above is met, Fastitocalon will start using Testudo Trompe. For this attack, there will be plenty of blue spots that appear on the ground, which will have small explosions coming from them. Not only will this be a little more challenging to dodge, but the sand kicked up by the explosions makes it hard to see the boss. Towards the final parts of the move, Fastitocalon will do a spinning shell attack, similar to its normal one, so keep an eye out for it and dodge accordingly.

Overall, Fastitocalon is a fairly easy hunt and you shouldn’t really have much trouble with it, mostly due to its slow attacks. Once you defeat the creature, you’ll receive 1,100 XP, 65 AP, 10,000 Gil, and 20 Renown. In addition to that, your spoils will be 2x "Scarletite" iconScarletite.
