How to Unlock the You're not the Boss of Me Trophy in FF16

By
Matt Chard

One of the more difficult trophies to unlock in Final Fantasy 16 is the “You’re Not the Boss of Me” trophy. This requires you to defeat a boss without taking any damage. Although the trophy states “Defeat a boss without taking any damage”, it’s a bit misleading as it’ll only count on bosses that reward a Medal of Valor which only specific bosses drop. Read below to find out what bosses these are, and the easiest way to check this trophy off your list on the way to a Platinum.

Midnight Raven is one of the easier bosses to fight for the “You’re Not the Boss of Me” Trophy.

What Bosses Drop Medal of Valors List

Here is a list of all the bosses in FF16 that drop a Medal of Valor when defeated flawlessly. Only these bosses will give the “You’re Not the Boss of Me” bronze trophy.

Best Way to Complete the You’re Not the Boss of Me Trophy

Although you can choose from any of the bosses in the list above, the easiest is either the Midnight Raven, or the Republic War Panther as they don’t have too many attacks to worry about, and the attacks that they do have, are easy to avoid. This strategy will be for the Midnight Raven battle, but you can use a lot of the tips for any of the bosses.

Tips

  • Do the trophy near the end of the game - You’ll have better equipment, better abilities, and access to more bosses.
  • Equip some of the Timely Accessories. Either Timely Focus, or Timely Evasion.
  • Upgrade, equip, and use Will-o’-the-Wykes at all times - This will make you invulnerable to four attacks when upgraded.
  • Avoid specific Eikon abilities that have a long animation - This includes, but is not limited to Gouge, Phoenix Shift, Thunderstorm, Windup, Raging Fists, and Dancing Steel.
  • Avoid using regular attacks such as Lunge (DualSense-ButtonSquare + DualSense-ButtonTriangle) as you can get hit during the animation.
  • Take it slow - There’s no time limit, so don’t rush in for the kill, just take your time to make sure you don’t get hit.

Recommended Abilities for Midnight Raven

Eikon Ability Damage Type
"Bahamut" iconBahamut "Gigaflare" iconGigaflare Damage (5 Stars)
"Bahamut" iconBahamut "Will-o'-the-Wykes" iconWill-o’-the-Wykes Will (2 Stars) - Master this and place it as the second Bahamut ability.
"Shiva" iconShiva "Diamond Dust" iconDiamond Dust Will (5 Stars)
"Shiva" iconShiva "Lightning Rod" iconLightning Rod Damage (2 Stars), Will (3 Stars) - Master this and place it as the second Shiva ability.
"Odin" iconOdin "Dancing Steel" iconDancing Steel Damage (1 Star) Will (2 Stars)
"Odin" iconOdin "Rift Slip" iconRift Slip No damage – Use to recover immediately from any ability or action.

You’ll only use Will-o’-the-Wykes, Diamond Dust, and Gigaflare, but Odin is a must for Zantetsuken, and Dancing Steel during the stagger phase. Note, Will-o’-the-Wykes is a gamble as it’ll leave you open for a second, but it will negate four attacks.

(1 of 2) Equip either the Timely Evasion, or Focus accessory to guarantee you get the trophy.

Flawless Midnight Raven No Hit Strategy

If you’re fighting him for the first time, make sure you do a manual save just before it. On the other hand, if you’re doing this near the end of the game as recommended, click on the Arete Stone in the Hideaway, and choose Stage Replay. Now select the first mission, The Greatwood which will take you into the mission with your current gear, and abilities. This part can be tedious, as you’ll need to make your way through the entire level until you can fight the Midnight Raven. Make your way through the area, building up your Zantetsuken Gauge to level 5 while skipping cutscenes, and eventually, you’ll get to the battle.

(1 of 2) Use Diamond Dust at the beginning of the battle to immediately shatter his Will-Gauge.

Use Diamond Dust at the beginning of the battle to immediately shatter his Will-Gauge. (left), Whenever Gigaflare is available, use it to decimate Midnight Raven. (right)

Start the battle with Will-o’-the-Wykes, but be careful of its short animation as you can get hit during this, so use it after an attack from Midnight Raven. All of his attacks are easily avoided by repeatedly hitting the dodge button away from him. As soon as you can, use Diamond Dust from Shiva to shatter his Will-Gauge then use Gigaflare right after. This should drop his health to half where you’ll have a few QTEs (Quick-Time Events) before the next phase begins.

When you regain control, use Will-o’-the-Wykes again while being careful not to get hit while using it, and use a level 5 Zantetsuken. If this doesn’t finish him, then follow up with Gigaflare which should do the job. You can also use Dancing Steel to raise up the Zantetsuken gauge again if you need to, but only use this during the Stagger phase, or after a Rift Slip. Once you deplete his health, you’ll get some more QTE’s before the battle finishes. If done correctly, you’ll get the Medal of Valor, and the Trophy, if not, you’ll need to replay the mission.
