Final Fantasy XVI

Lost in a Fog Main Quest Walkthrough

By
Nathan Garvin

The fifth main quest in Final Fantasy XVI, "Lost in a Fog" iconLost in a Fog will begin after the events at "Rosalith Castle" iconRosalith Castle, when you set off on an expedition to "Stillwind" iconStillwind to clear it of its Blight-induced Goblin menace. This page will walk you through Lost in a Fog, including how to find every item in Stillwind and how to defeat the enemies that plague this swamp. This page will also cover new features, like the ability to purchase, upgrade and master new abilities, details on the Timely Accessories that unlock at the start of this main quest, and a tutorial on the "Magic Burst" iconMagic Burst mechanic.

Starting at Stillwind, you’ll be able to access the Abilities menu and purchase/upgrade abilities.

Commanding Companions and Purchasing Abilities - FF16 Lost in a Fog Main Quest Walkthrough

Before you actually get started with this quest, note that you’re accompanied by "Sir Wade" iconSir Wade and "Sir Tyler" iconSir Tyler, who will fight alongside you. You can’t give them any orders and they shouldn’t be relied on too much in combat, but they may distract some enemies from time to time. At the very least, they can’t be defeated and you don’t need to babysit them, so while they’re of dubious usefulness, they’re at least not liabilities.

You’ll also unlock the “Abilities” tab in the main menu, where you can spend earned Ability Points to buy or upgrade abilities. At this point you don’t have much to spend, so you’ll be restricted to investing on new abilities. You’ll generally earn Ability Points - the currency used to unlock, upgrade and master abilities - by defeating enemies, and since refunding spend AP is free and can be done any time you’re not in combat, you should feel emboldened to try out new abilities any time you have sufficient AP.

For more information on the Phoenix abilities you have access to, check out the page Best Phoenix Eikon Abilities in FF16. To learn more about purchasing, upgrading, mastering and refunding abilities, visit our How to Purchase, Upgrade and Refund Abilities in FF16 page.

You will also unlock Timely Accessories, which grant a variety of accessibility boons.

Timely Accessories - FF16 Lost in a Fog Main Quest Walkthrough

You’ll also unlock Timely Accessories at this point, which are the accessibility options in Final Fantasy XVI. They come in four flavors:

Timely Accessory Effects
"Ring of Timely Focus" iconRing of Timely Focus Time slows before an evadable enemy attack strikes Clive.
"Ring of Timely Evasion" iconRing of Timely Evasion Clive will automatically evade attacks, as long as the attack can be evaded.
"Ring of Timely Strikes" iconRing of Timely Strikes Complex ability combinations can be executed by simply pressing DualSense-ButtonSquare.
"Ring of Timely Healing" iconRing of Timely Healing Clive will automatically use a potion when his HP falls below a certain point.

The Ring of Timely Focus and the Ring of Timely Evasion do not work together, the latter will override the former. If you want to auto-heal or make combat easier, feel free to equip these, they don’t impact drops, trophies, EXP or AP gains or progression in any way. For more information, check out the page Timely Accessories in FFXVI - Complete Guide.

You’ll fight a lot of goblins in !Stillwind - practice what you learned against the Lord Commander to put them down, and consider trying new tricks, like !Magic Burst.

Exploring Stillwind - FF16 Lost in a Fog Main Quest Walkthrough

When you’re ready to go, venture forth to reach a more open area where you should veer right to snag… 2 gil… then duck under a fallen tree to encounter the current inhabitants of this bleak demesne - goblins. Incompetence on the part of your allies leads to a fight, and this is really just a warmup. Unlike the Lord Commander, these foes have lethal intent, but frankly, they lack the means to see it through. They don’t deal much damage and aren’t terribly aggressive, and with 3-on-3 odds even the worst play shouldn’t be enough to cause you much distress. Practice what you learned during the combat tutorial and put these beasts down, then pass through the remains of a gate.

Pass through the dilapidated gate and search a ruined house to the right (slide between some beams) to find a Strength Tonic, then continue down the path and pass through another gate to reach what remains of Stillwind proper. The original residents may find the place inhospitable, but it suits goblins just fine - put down another dozen of them, then enter a house to the left and search the remnants of a back room to score another Potion.

In the depths of the abandoned village you’ll encounter Goblin Weavers, annoying spellcasters whom you should prioritize just to eliminate the ranged threat.

Smash through a wooden wall to venture deeper into the village, search atop a long-abandoned wagon to find a Potion, then enter a house to the left and go upstairs to find a Strength Tonic on a bed. Jump out a window and drop down to return to the swamp, then continue up a ladder and drop down to find more goblins. This time your typical Goblin Mugger is joined by a Goblin Weaver - a spellcaster who will pelt you with magic bolts from afar. Definitely prioritize these beastmen first, if for no other reason than so you don’t have to worry about them interrupting you anymore. You’ll also be treated to the novel and unwelcome introduction of reinforcements, including another Goblin Weaver.

The goblin leader lurks in the town square of !Stillwind. Armed with a horn and the good sense to stay out of reach, this goblin will marshal his allies against you.

Defeat your foes, then smash through the wall of a house to the right to find a Potion, then return outside and smash a wooden beam to lower a bridge, allowing you to progress. Cross the bridge and snag yet another Potion right on your path - topping you up for the fights ahead, no doubt - then cross another bridge to reach the town square, where a particularly belligerent goblin with a horn awaits. Dispatch a host of lesser goblins - the standard Goblin Muggers and Goblin Weavers we’re now accustomed to - and the goblin leader will summon a formidable foe… a Gigas. The rest of the main quest Lost in a Fog is essentially just a pair of boss fights, with little of substance (aside form the obligatory resupply of restoratives) in between them. Check out the following pages for in-depth strategies that’ll help you defeat these foes:

After those fights are concluded, the next main quest, Flight of a Fledgling will begin.
