After you finally set sail in Full Steam, you will be at sea chasing down the Black Galleon where "Barnabas Tharmr" iconBarnabas Tharmr is holding "Jill Warrick" iconJill Warrick captive. The fourtieth main story quest, Through The Maelstrom, starts with a longer cutscene where Barnabas once again shows off the power of "Odin" iconOdin. Where to Find Jill on The Black Galleon in FF16

You will start on the side of the ship where you will quickly be ambushed by several enemies. Several Royal Osfreyr will attack you along with a Royal Togvaldr. The Togvaldr will appear after you wipe out the Osfreyr. This is a slightly harder enemy that can deal a bit more damage to Clive, so be careful not to get hit - dodging is key to keep your health bar from being cut down. You can always use "Titanic Block" iconTitanic Block to help stave off some of the damage. Once you are done with the enemies up top, go in the door on the side, you will now be inside the ship.

Be sure to grab the chest near the stairs as it contains a "Meteorite" iconMeteorite, and then head through the next door. You will now be on the main deck of the ship where another group of enemies will attack Clive. More Royal Osfreyr will attack along with a Warlord Sveithvald. Take out the Royal Osfreyr, and then turn your attention to the Warlord Sveithvald. This is another enemy you will need to dodge or use Titanic Block with as he can charge and take down a large chunk of your health. Make sure not to lock yourself into any attacks that leave you open to being hit.

(1 of 3) Defeat the enemies throughout the ship.

Once the Warlord is vanquished, head back inside the ship using the door, climb down the ladder, and be sure to grab the treasure chest with The Breath of Earth ("Earthen Fury" iconEarthen Fury) accessory in it, and then proceed forward. You will now go through another door, and find a few more Royal Osfreyr, defeat them, and proceed forward to find Jill.

How to Defeat Barnabas in Through The Maelstrom

A longer cutscene will now play where Barnabas sends the Black Galleon to the sea floor and then approaches Clive for a boss battle. This is where you get to see some of his actual abilities play out, but be aware that this isn’t a battle that you’re supposed to win. Barnabas will drop quite a bit of dialogue during the fight, so be sure to pay attention to get the full narrative.

(1 of 3) Barnabas uses a lot of powerful beam attacks.

His attacks consist of energy beams that hit Clive hard. You will need to focus on dodging his attacks and playing into the battle until Barnabas finally starts to charge up the Iron Flash attack. His attacks will pick up at this stage, don’t worry about hitting Barnabas, just stay alive until it finishes charging. Once iron Flash is completely charged, another lengthy cutscene will play and you will be sent to the next main quest, Across The Narrow.
