Final Fantasy XVI

A Chance Encounter Main Quest Walkthrough

By
Nathan Garvin

The first proper main quest with present-day Clive, "A Chance Encounter" iconA Chance Encounter picks up where the demo left off, immediately after the battle between the two fire Eikons. Chronologically, however, this picks up narratively where Clive lost consciousness during To Kill a Dominant. This page will provide a walkthrough for A Chance Encounter in Final Fantasy XVI, including the locations of every item you can find, and a guide for navigating the wastes left in the wake of "Shiva" iconShiva and "Titan" iconTitan.

(1 of 2) At the start of this quest you’ll be able to invest in (or at least, look at) Phoenix-related abilities.

New Phoenix Eikon Abilities and Preorder DLC

Clive will be roused by his comrades and when you recover you’ll be notified that you can now purchase new Eikonic Abilities. Go into your menu and navigate to the “Abilities” tab, then pan up to see the newly-unlocked Phoenix Tree, which has three abilities you can master and two you can unlock, although the AP costs of these are prohibitively high at the moment. Nothing a little main quest progression won’t solve! Also note that you’ve unlocked the "Scarlet Cyclone" iconScarlet Cyclone ability, which you can use by pressing DualSense-R2 + DualSense-ButtonTriangle. Not as useful, perhaps, against single targets as "Rising Flames" iconRising Flames, Scarlet Cyclone is a good crowd control ability to abuse trash mobs with.

Also note that any DLC content you’re entitled to can now be accessed, just go to the “System” tab in the menu, then go to the “Redeemable Items” tab to find these. Between new weapons and accessories that boost EXP and gil earned, it’s well worth checking out. For more information, check out the How to Redeem Preorder DLC in Final Fantasy XVI page.

Searching for Shiva - FF16 A Chance Encounter Main Quest Walkthrough

When you’re all ready to go, follow the linear path, climb a ledge and pass under some debris. Grab a Stoneskin Tonic along the path ahead and slide through a cleft in some rocks, beyond which you’ll get a clearer look at the devastation wrought by the duel between Titan and Shiva. Follow the linear path, picking up a Strength Tonic and another Stoneskin Tonic as you pick your way through the tortured landscape. Drop off a ledge when you must, then snag a Strength Tonic. That’s it for the items - you need to merely vault over a gap and rejoin your companions to trigger another scene.

With your quarry spotted you’ll leap to attack Shiva’s Dominant and her bearers, which will be covered in on the page Shiva’s Dominant Boss Guide in Final Fantasy 16. As with Lost in a Fog, this main quest ends with two boss fights in a row, and after the fight with Shiva’s Dominant, you’ll engage a second boss, which is covered on the page Tiamat Boss Guide in FF16. Once those two fights are over, the main quest will continue with Hide, Hideaway
