Building and Upgrading the Hideout

Many Assassin’s Creed games have had some gimmick or another, something upgradeable to encourage the player to explore and plunder, to gather resources and spend them on upgrading weapons, a warship or, in the case of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, a Hideout. This page will discuss how constructing new buildings in your Hideout and upgrading them works in Assassin’s Creed Shadows!

Page Breakdown

Unlocking the Hideout

Progress the main questline through the tutorial and eventually you’ll start the quest From Spark to Flame, where you’ll be tasked with returning to Tomiko. Reach Tomiko’s Homestead and there Tomiko will allow Naoe to make use of her property to create the Hideout. The estate begins with the Hiroma and Stables, and before you leave for the first time you’ll need to gather resources and build the Kakurega, which will give you a scout, allow you to fast travel and access to [contracts].

(1 of 3) At the start, your Hideout will have a HIroma and some Stables,

Buildings and Upgrades

Now that you’ve built a Kakurega and unlocked some basic gameplay functions, you’ll be free to build more structures at the Hideout, and while none of them unlock anything as vital as fast travel, there are still significant gains to be made by doing so! Before getting into the details, however, just know that you’re going to need resources to build, and in the case of some themed rooms, Mon. Check out the linked page to learn more about farming crops, wood and minerals (hint: smuggle and complete [contracts]), and beyond that, some structures can only be unlocked after meeting certain conditions - buying them from merchants, completing quests, etc.

(1 of 3) You can gather more resources by completing Contracts,

You can build structures by visiting the hideout and checking out the diorama in the Hiroma, or by simply holding down the DualSense-ButtonTriangle / Xbox-ButtonY button while outside (but still on the Hideout grounds). From here you can select buildings and upgrade them, move them or edit them - all except the Stables and Hiroma, which cannot be moved. Editing buildings is mostly cosmetic, allowing you to reskin textures like the roof and walls, or change what kind of storage objects are within and what’s displayed upon them (you can loot some decorations chests and buy cosmetic building items from merchants). Upgrading is also fairly straight-forward, allowing you to expend resources to unlock new building effects. This doesn’t change the size or look of the building in any way.

When being built or moved, buildings can be rotated and some buildings can be connected - either directly snapped together or joined by Engawa - roofed outdoor corridors that are customizable, including threeway, fourway and L-shaped junctions along with three flavors of straight sections. Simply put, you don’t have to make a mega-complex if you don’t want to, so feel free to spread those buildings out… not that there’s much reason to visit most buildings after they’re built, unless you want to admire your own decorations. You can also enter erase mode, which mostly just allows you to destroy the trees growing on the estate, although there’s not much point considering they’ll automatically be removed if you try to build there.

(1 of 4) Some new buildings can be snapped onto the main complex,

All in all, there’s not much reason to fuss over the layout or orientation of your Hideout’s buildings - it’s purely aesthetic.
