There are a number of vendors in Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, most of which will just sell you some gear or materials. However, there is one special vendor that will give you food by simply speaking with them, aptly named Food Vendors. By getting these food items, which are for a side quest later on in the game, called Feast for Thought, you will increase the number of Rations your characters can use. There are a total of 16 Food Vendors in the game and while said quest will mark them on the map, you don’t need to do the quest to gain their benefits.
You can find Food Vendors that give you food, which can increase the number of Rations for healing.
Increasing the Number of Rations¶
As mentioned above, all of the Food Vendors can be gotten as soon as you gain access to the open world. You won’t see their marker until you get close enough to their location, plus the markers only show on the map when you’re fully zoomed in. While the food are quest items, you can increase your number of Rations by simply gathering them as you explore, without needing to do said quest.

Natto¶
You will find this Food Vendor in Izumi Settsu, right on the outskirts of Sakai, a town you visit multiple times for quests in the early game. You’ll likely come across this vendor while scouting the game, since you’re here often. It’s just outside of the eastern side of Sakai, a little more towards the southern end. This vendor will give you Natto.

Upon reaching that area, look for the castle and southeast of it will be the Kakurega. Go a little south of the Kakurega to find the Food Vendor, at the corner of the roads there. It is found in the northern half of Kyoto, north of the name on the map. If you find the Kakurega in that area, then the vendor will be just southwest of it. If not, then look southeast of the Kubo Sama Old Residence. This vendor will give you some Yohi Mochi.

The main feature of this region is Lake Biwa, a large lake that is centered and takes up a good portion of it. On the northeastern shoreline of Lake Biwa is an area called Nagahama, the location of the vendor. Once you arrive in the town, explore until you find the Ornament Vendor, then check a little southwest of it to find the Food Vendor. This one will give you the Miso Soup food item.

When you fully zoom out on the map, you will notice a river running through the southern half of the Yamato Region. Locate the crossing point towards the eastern end, a bridge, and start from there. Just southwest of the bridge will be a small village, named Kawakami.
Continue southwest from Kawakami, until you reach a crossroads that has a Jizo Statue. From there, you want to venture along the path to the southeast, which is a winding road that cuts through the forest. This will eventually lead you to the Food Vendor, as he’s along this path. If you are still lost and have unlocked the Nyoirinji Temple, it’s southwest from that location. This vendor will give you the Tofu food item.

When you first start the game and get to the proper open world, you only have three Rations in your inventory for healing during combat. Collecting these food items will increase the number of Rations you get, up to a total of six after getting all 16 of them. You’ll gain an additional Ration at the thresholds of 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, and then 16 food items.
