Money makes the world go ‘round, as they say… or in this case, Mon. Back in feudal Japan, however, capitalism had yet to be properly imported to the country (or even properly developed in Europe, to be fair). While money can still buy you much of what you need, sometimes it just makes more sense to have a lithe shinobi gather the tons of crops, stone and wood required to build and upgrade an assassin’s hideout. This page will discuss Hideout Resources in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, including various ways of acquiring said resources efficiently!

Hideout Resources¶
There are four types of Hideout Resources in Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Crops, Stone, Wood and Mon, the latter of which is the main currency in the game, and something of the black sheep of Hideout Resources as it’s not acquired in quite the same way. More on that later, but generally you’ll use Hideout Resources to build and upgrade structures at the Hideout, which give you various passive bonuses that can greatly alter gameplay in ways that benefit you. Building can increase the number of Scouts you have at your disposal, reduce the cost of smuggling, reduce weapon and armor upgrade costs, and more. It’s well worth your while to seek out these resources, and the sooner you build up your Hideout the easier it’ll be to accumulate more resources.

Farming Crops, Stone and Wood¶
Unlike some of the other Assassin’s Creed RPGs, you won’t just go around breaking down trees and picking up metal in the wild - these exist as cut and processed goods in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which means they have owners you’ll need to deal with. All the tips below apply to crops, stone and wood, but Mon is a bit different in some respects - you’ll get Mon by looting chests, selling items, completing quests and [Contracts] and more, and while there’s some overlap between gathering Mon and the other Hideout Resources, if you want the other three materials you’ll usually only getting Mon incidentally, and vice versa.
Enemy Camps and Castles¶
The most straight-forward way of getting Hideout Resources is by taking them from your enemies, be they bandits or Nobunaga loyalists, it doesn’t really matter. Nearly every restricted, enemy-filled area in the game will have stockpiles of materials lying about, with enemy camps and castles being the two major locations to raid. Both of these are marked on your map and in the case of castles, you tend to also be tasked with defeating some commanding Samurai Daisho, which will allow you to loot a legendary chest in the area. Double win! Just kill and search these camps and castles and pick up whatever pallets of materials you find stashed about.
Smuggling¶
Immediately after completing From Spark to Flame you’ll get your first scout. You’ll also have access to the quest Smuggler’s Run, which just tasks you with smuggling materials for the first time. To do this, you’ll need to raid a camp or castle, find a locked storeroom, search and kill the vicinity to find a key (sometimes enemies will be carrying it, but it’s good practice to kill your way through camps and castles, anyways) and get access to said storehouse. Inside you’ll find a pallet of some resource or another. If you have two scouts free, you can assign them to smuggle these resources (if you have Stables Lv2, it’ll only cost one scout to smuggle a resource). Once the season changes, your scout(s) will bring back the resources they were assigned to smuggle, often each bringing scores of said materials - a worthwhile investment, for sure!

Contracts¶
At a Kakurega you can pick up new contracts, and while some of these offer Crafting Materials or Mon as their primary reward, others grant the player large amounts of crops, wood, and/or stone. It’s free to pick these contracts up and if you get around to them, you could haul in a great number of resources. Even better, the targets are usually generic bandit camps, which often have chests to loot and resources to collect, in addition to whatever reward you get for completing the contract. Contracts will change every season, to be sure to get them a gander when they do and if there’s a particularly lucrative contract, be sure to complete it!

Buying and Selling from Merchants¶
Last and least, you can always just buy more resources from merchants. It’s generally going to take 4-15 Mon per resource you want to buy, so it’s not cheap to stockpile, say, hundreds of resources, but you also also sell excess resources to accumulate Mon… albeit at around half the buying price.
All in all, your best bet is to check contracts for resource-rich offerings, and plunder castles and camps (including the aforementioned contract). Not only will you just be able to pick up a fair amount of resources, but you can also assign scouts to smuggle resources for you. The best part about this is you’re often getting resources from two or more sources at once!
