Mass Effect: Andromeda

Strange Beacon

By
Nathan Garvin

Another side quest that’s easily overlooked, this one is rather out of the way, but it’s still somewhat near the Voeld outpost. South, southeast of the Voeld outpost are some Remnant ruins… no, not those ones, the ones south of the first ones you’ll likely stumble across; the correct Remnant ruins are east (and slightly south) of the western-most monolith, southwest of a Mining Zone.

Kill the Remnant near some ruins (left) then interact with a Strange Beacon to get some startling news (right).

Be sure to drive the Nomad close to the Remnant ruins (for reason that will be made clear soon enough) then get out and go about business as usual. At first this Remnant site looks like any other one - there are some passive bots that’ll get angry when you invade their personal space and a chest you can loot a container on a platform for some goodies. Of course, the fact that something is amiss will be broadcast when the “Strange Beacon” quest indicator appears on the top right of your screen.

Sure enough, search a “Device” on a wall to the southeast and an Angaran named Holger will inform you that you’re standing in the midst of a Kett minefield, which surrounds these ruins. How you made it here unscathed is a bit of a mystery, but after the conversation you’ll be prompted to “Sweep the minefield to escape”.

You can go around scanning and destroying mines (left), but it’s far simpler to just hop in the Nomad and drive away (right).

Your main focus should be on the “escape” bit, as the “sweeping the minefield” is probably not only impractical, it’s unnecessary. First you should note that taking the obvious route and just fast-traveling away is not a good idea, as it can glitch the quest, so don’t do that. Also, it’s very likely that your hardsuit’s life support probably isn’t full, and there’s no way to replenish it nearby, so why waste time? Instead, just make your way back to the Nomad (you did park it close, right?) and simply drive away from the Remnant site. Most Kett mines will detonate well away from you (the Kett are clearly not good mine-makers) and any damage that the Nomad does sustain can be mitigated by just waiting for the shields to come up. When you get far enough away from the Remnant site this quest will end.

For surviving this annoyance you’ll earn 29 AVP, +2% Voeld viability and 530 XP.
