Super Mario RPG (2023)

Status Effects Explained in Super Mario RPG

By
Matt Chard

Although this is a Mario game, Super Mario RPG is an RPG at heart. It’s even in its name! As with most RPGs, there will be status effects in the game which debilitate your party. There are six status effects in Super Mario RPG, seven if you count dead (downed) as a status effect, and all of them will impact your party in one way or another. Here, you’ll find out what each status effect does, how to counter it, or how to remove it. Further on in the page, you’ll find out what accessories to equip in order to prevent the status effects afflicting your party members.

Piranha Plants are notorious for afflicting status effects on the party. They will frequently put you to Sleep, or turn you into a Scarecrow.

Scarecrow_Status_Effects_Super_Mario_RPG copy.jpg Scarecrow Prevents you from attacking with Joy-Con-ButtonA or using items with Joy-Con-ButtonX. You can still use Special moves with Joy-Con-ButtonY. Wait a few turns for the status effect to disappear or use a Cleansing Juice.
Downed_Status_Effects_Super_Mario_RPG copy.jpg Downed When your HP falls to 0, you will be totally unable to act. This is the only status that won’t end on its own after a few turns. Use a Pick Me Up on the downed ally.
