This is a quick and easy guide on how to attack in Super Mario RPG. Attacking is a fundamental component of combat (naturally) in the game, so learning how to get the perfect attack is crucial for dealing increased damage and showing those enemies who’s boss!

Attacking in Super Mario RPG¶

To attack an enemy, all you’ll need to do is press the “A” Button and then select your desired enemy.

How to Deal Increased Damage Attacks¶

Then, you can also increase your damage by hitting “A” again when the exclamation mark pops up (right when you’re about to hit an enemy). This is all about timing so if you don’t get it quite right, you won’t deal the extra damage. You’ll know if you’ve landed the extra damage as you’ll see your character go for an extra hit and some stars will pop up all around the enemy!

Practice makes perfect with this, so the more you battle it out with random encounters in the wild, the quicker you’ll get the hang of it. You’ll also be able to make your physical attacks more powerful by equipping weapons and increasing physical damage when you level up.

Do remember, however, that some enemies will be weaker to magical and elemental attacks so make sure to use Thought Peek and the Monster List to figure out how best to deal with various enemies - not all of them will be weak to physical attacks.
