Assassin's Creed Mirage

Al-Ghul Investigation - Caravanserai - Assassin’s Creed Mirage

By
Scott Peers

This investigation begins when you speak with Roshan at the Habiyah Bureau once you’ve completed the Ali ibn Muhammad investigation. She’ll take you to the Caravanserai, a hub of trade on the outskirts of Baghdad. There you’ll need to find a way to lure out a member of the Order of the Ancients named Al-Ghul, who will become one of your first assassination targets from the order.

Al-Ghul investigation, Assassin’s Creed Mirage.

A Delicate Alliance

If you’re starting immediately after freeing Ali ibn Muhammad from the Damascus Great Prison, you’ll need to lower your notoriety before you can do anything else. You can do this by tearing Wanted Posters from walls throughout Baghdad or paying a Munadi NPC to remove all your notoriety at once. You can learn more about the notoriety system on our How Notoriety Works page.

After sufficiently decreasing your notoriety, you’ll be able to find and speak with Ali, who can be found with his rebel troops at a watermill on the northern outskirts of Baghdad. Approaching him will begin a cutscene, during which Roshan makes an appearance. You’ll soon be following her to the next objective.

How to Lure Al-Ghul Out at the Caravanserai

The main objective that you’ll have for this mission is to lure Al-Ghul out into the open so that you can assassinate him. Roshan will take you to the Caravanserai, located in the desert to the northwest of Baghdad. Once there, you’ll need to find a way to infiltrate the walls and begin your search for ways to lure Al-Ghul out.

Climb Over the Caravanserai Walls

The simplest and easiest way to infiltrate the Caravanserai is to climb over the walls. If you go to the eastern side, you’ll find some boxes and wooden beams that you can climb on to reach the ramparts. There are guards up here, so be ready to deal with them. It’s important that you’re not seen by too many, since they can easily raise the alarm and break your cover.

(1 of 2) Climb the boxes and wooden beams to get onto the ramparts of the Caravanserai.

Even after dealing with the guards on the ramparts, there are still some guards to be cautious of in the main square of the Caravanserai. As strange as it may look to the civilians, the best way to avoid the guards is to stay crouched, and try to remain close to a feature that you can quickly jump into to avoid detection, such as a bush or other foliage.

To look for a distraction, you’ll need to use your bird to scout the area, and you can also use Eagle Vision to highlight relevant NPCs in orange. One of these can be found on the northeast side of the Caravanserai: a civilian who tells you that they were promised steady work and good pay, but they’re being made to slog in the desert instead. You can ask the civilian what you might do to help, and he’ll tell you about a deed that binds him and the others to Mas’ood (aka Al-Ghul).

You’ll need to speak with the workers’ handler to learn more about this deed, and you can easily find him using Eagle Vision again. He’s located on the southern side of the Caravanserai, with a document icon above his head. There are others throughout the market who share the same icon, but they’re only regular merchants. Keep asking and you’ll soon find the handler who is also known simply as “Merchant”, but this one trades in slaves. If you want the deed from him, you’ll need to pay 15000 Dirham, which at this point in the game is an absurd amount of coin.

(1 of 4) Use Eagle Vision to locate the civilian worker.

Pickpocket the Workers’ Deed from the Merchant

There’s no need to fret, though - you’re a master thief, remember? Just end the conversation and wait for the merchant to begin walking around the Caravanserai. So long as you’ve dealt with the surrounding guards, you can follow him without being harassed, and steal the deed by pickpocketing it from him. If you need tips for how to pickpocket, be sure to check our page on that here.

Once you’ve obtained the Workers’ Deed, you can deliver it to the civilian worker who you spoke with earlier. This effectively frees them from their service to Al-Ghul, which is enough to draw his attention and lure him out. Now is your time to strike.

Assassinate Al-Ghul

There’s no specific method that you have to use to assassinate Al-Ghul, but the mission will direct you to the wooden beam above him nonetheless. He can now be found on a balcony on the western side of the Caravanserai, and you’re free to either climb up and kill him directly, or use the wooden beam above him instead. If you do the latter, you’ll get a bonus animation, so it’s worth doing for that alone. Be aware that you’ll encounter some extra guards on your way up, though, so you need to assassinate them too.

Use the Assassin’s Focus Ability

After killing Al-Ghul, a cutscene will play during which he tells Basim some things he might not wish to know, and the terror from his nightmares makes a brief appearance. After this, you’ll find yourself back in the courtyard of the Caravanserai, where you’ll be introduced to a new mechanic: Assassin’s Focus. This is an ability that allows you to quickly target multiple enemies, and then assassinate them in a swift series of strikes. It’s a powerful ability, meant to be used when you’re in the trickiest situations.

(1 of 2) You can see the balcony and the beam from which you can assassinate Al-Ghul once you’ve created the distraction.

After using Assassin’s Focus for the first time, Basim finds himself outside the walls of the Caravanserai, where he tells Roshan about his strange nightmares. The scene reveals a bit more about Roshan’s story too, and once it’s over the mission will be complete.
