Assassin's Creed Mirage

How Notoriety Works in Assassin's Creed Mirage

By
Scott Peers

The return to a stealth-focused approach to combat in Assassin’s Creed Mirage means that the notoriety system is at the heart of its gameplay. You’ll need to keep your notoriety low if you want to explore freely throughout Baghdad, without being harassed by the guards or heckled by citizens. There are three main levels of notoriety in AC Mirage, and each one brings an increased level of threat from your enemies. If you hit the maximum level of notoriety, the elite Shakiriyya guards will begin hunting you. Trust us, you don’t want that. On this page, we’ll show you how to keep your notoriety low by remaining undetected, and how to decrease it by removing Wanted Posters or bribing Munadi NPCs with Power Tokens.

How Notoriety Increases in AC Mirage

If you’ve played the game for any length of time in Baghdad after the prologue, you’ve probably already had a few experiences with the guards chasing you after your notoriety has increased. As mentioned above, there are three main levels of notoriety in AC Mirage, ranking from level 1 (least notorious) to level 3 (most notorious). You can see what happens with each increase in the table below. You can track how much notoriety you currently have using the bar in the bottom right of your screen.

Notoriety Levels

Notoriety Effects
Level 1 Civilians might recognize Basim and call the guards to their location. Wanted Posters appear on some walls around Baghdad.
Level 2 Guards have increased perception and are more likely to detect you. Archers start patrolling the rooftops. Civilians are also more likely to report you to the authorities. More Wanted Posters appear, which can attract passersby.
Level 3 Maximum notoriety. The elite Shakiriyya guard is unleashed on your trail. Guards are very likely to detect Basim. Civilians gather around posters and there is a high chance for them to recognize you and call the guards.

The main ways in which you gain notoriety are by committing illegal acts. The most common of these are stealing, trespassing, and killing. If you do any of these while being observed by civilians or guards, your notoriety will increase. However, if you steal, trespass, or kill without being seen, your notoriety will not increase.

If you commit a relatively minor illegal act such as stealing, your notoriety will rise by a small amount, usually below the threshold for level 1. In this scenario, if you stay out of trouble for a short period of time, your notoriety will decrease automatically. If you kill someone, it will instantly rise to level 1 or above, and you’ll need to find a Wanted Poster or bribe a Munadi to decrease it.

In general, this is as complicated as it gets, but there are exceptions. For example, if you already have a notoriety level of 1, and you commit an illegal act while being seen, it will increase by a specific amount. If you then kill or successfully hide from the NPC who saw you, your notoriety will gradually decrease to the previous amount until the coast is clear. In this way, you can prevent notoriety from rising if you’re in a tight spot.

If you’re more familiar with the most recent Assassin’s Creed games such as Odyssey and Valhalla, you may not think that the notoriety system is a big deal. However, if you want to be free to explore without being constantly chased and attacked, you’ll need to lower your notoriety level as a matter of priority. Not only is it cumbersome to have to deal with guards chasing you, but your combat prowess is significantly diminished in AC Mirage. You can’t expect to obliterate countless enemies with godlike powers in this game, as you could with Valhalla.

How to Decrease Notoriety in AC Mirage

If you’ve been particularly naughty and consistently committed illegal acts to the point where your notoriety has reached level 1 or above, you’ll need to take action to decrease it. As briefly mentioned previously, you can do this in two main ways: by tearing down Wanted Posters or bribing Munadi NPCs.

Where to Find Wanted Posters

You can find Wanted Posters throughout Baghdad, on the walls of practically any building. They’re fairly large so difficult to miss, and you can tear them down quickly just by interacting with them. At a notoriety level of 1 or 2, you should be able to do this with ease, but you’ll need to be cautious by keeping your distance from guards. At notoriety level 3, you’ll find that Wanted Posters are often surrounded by civilians, who will quickly recognize you and call for the guards, so you’ll need to act swiftly.

Where to Find Munadi NPCs

The Munadi NPCs are essentially a form of news bearers, and they will dictate various happenings to the civilians of Baghdad from a modest platform. You can find these platforms most frequently in market or trade areas, or any place where a lot of people tend to gather, such as public squares. You can’t just bribe Munadi with coin, either. You’ll need to present them with a Power Token, a type of Khidmah Token that you can earn by completing Contracts. Alternatively, you can pickpocket them from civilians if you’re lucky.

Munadi NPCs can be bribed with Power Tokens to decrease your notoriety.
