Bishaten is giant monkey introduced in Monster Hunter Rise, with a penchant for throwing fruit at its foes. In the main story, it appears in the Urgent Quest, “Monkey Wrench in Your Plans”.
Overview¶
This cheeky creature might not seem dangerous at first glance, but it can easily make a mockery of you, if you don’t take it seriously. Bishaten is notable for having a giant tail, used for attacking or to prop itself up. It also has wings on its forearms, allowing for a small degree of gliding.
As shown in its introductory movie, Bishaten can utilize fruits as weapons. The fruits themselves don’t do a lot of damage, but they can annoy you and, worse of all, inflict poison.

Attack Patterns¶
Swipe¶
A somewhat rare attack where Bishaten swipes forward using its forearms.
Lunge¶
Another rare move, but one you should learn. Bishaten does a quick backflip, menacingly crouches down, then throws itself forward a considerable distance.
Side Tail Slam¶
Watch out when Bishaten is looking at you while facing sideways. It will quickly slam its tail forwards.
Flash Bomb¶
Bishaten covers its face with its arms and sparks will appear near its mouth. If you see this, move far, far away. It will pass the fruit to its tail, then slam its tail down, causing a flash bomb. If you’re too close, you’ll be stunned for several seconds, making you a sitting duck.
Poison Tail Slam¶
The monkey will grab one fruit from its belly pouch and give it to its tail. Then it’ll do an overhead slam with its tail, causing the fruit to explode. Getting too close to the purple gas may inflict poison. However, Bishaten will idle for a while, so you can lay down the punishment.
Wild Fruit Toss¶
Bishaten grabs one fruit in each hand. It’ll toss these two fruits forward. After a brief pause, it’ll usually toss a lot more fruit (which is kind of funny, if you don’t get hit that is). This is a great chance to get up close and attack Bishaten. Obviously, don’t approach from the direction it’s throwing fruit.
Arm/Wing Sweep¶
When Bishaten is standing on its tail, it may do a sweeping motion with its arms to catch you off guard. It can also roll around with its tail, like a clown on a circus ball, then perform an arm sweep or two. When using this move, it kind of looks like Bishaten has lost its balance–but it’s 100% in control.
Similarly. Bishaten can raise one of its forearms high up. It’ll then sweep the ground with its wing. The sheer force of the move will create some dust.
Rapid Tail Slam¶
Again, this is a move performed when Bishaten is standing with its tail. Be careful when it makes a menacing face and looks like it’s ready to pounce. Soon afterwards, it’ll spin and slam its tail down two or three times in a row.
Fruity Tailspin¶
We couldn’t think of a better name. Bishaten lobs two fruits to its tail, then quickly spins its tail to hit whatever is ahead (hopefully not you).
Corkscrew Charge¶
Bishaten will twirl around while on its tail, to gather momentum. It will then rush foward through the air, while spinning like a drill. There’s an audible warning for this move.
Moving Fruit Toss¶
This is more annoying than dangerous. Bishaten will move backwards at speed, while throwing a fruit forwards.
There’s a version where it jumps back and grabs one fruit with both hands. It’ll chuck the fruit in front, then run sideways, as if to mock you. Come back here, monkey!
Spinning Charge¶
This is telegraphed by Bishaten standing on its forearms. It’ll then spin around straight ahead. Sometimes, it’ll do another spinning charge immediately afterwards. Wait until it goes back on all fours.
Hang Upside-down¶
Bishaten will hang on a wall upside-down like a bat, while swinging side to side, throwing fruit. Be wary that it can move sideways to another part of the wall. If you hit Bishaten while its upside-down, you’ll usually stun it, causing it to fall. Take too long and Bishaten can use the Corkscrew Charge from here.
Strategy¶
If you scrolled through the list above, you’ll find that Bishaten has a lot of moves at is disposal. As long as you’re reasonably quick to react, there shouldn’t be too many that are problematic though. The most dangerous moves are the spinning charge and corkscrew charge, but the tells for those are easy to read.
Bishaten can spend a while standing or rolling on its tail. If possible, look for an opening to hit its tail. Although you can’t cut off the tail, if you hit it enough, you may stun Bishaten. Another good opportunity to stun Bishaten is when it’s upside-down. You can wiredash upwards and attack while falling.
As mentioned in the list of attacks, other safe windows to pummel Bishaten are after the poison tail slam and when it’s throwing lots of fruit at once. For the former, remember to stand clear from the poison gas. Meanwhile, during the fruit assault, either be close from the start or approach from the side.
