Horizon Zero Dawn

Queen's Gambit

This sidequest will begin as soon as you finish with Traitor’s Bounty, with Vanasha asking you to help Itamen and his mother out of Sunfall. Her task that she gives you is to go speak with Three-Toe Huadiv to see if he has cleared the way for them. He can be found at a campfire northeast of the Tallneck in Rustwash. Upon arriving and speaking to him, you find out that a certain “rock-eating demon” is in the pass and preventing things from proceeding smoothly. Of course, from the vague description, you can figure out that Huadiv is talking about a Rockbreaker.

It’s up to you to kill it and there’s a certain spot you can use without fearing of the machine’s attacks. There is a small ledge just below Huadiv where you can use the walls of the valley to block the ranged attacks. From here, pelt the Rockbreaker with some freeze arrows and while it’s debilitated, strike its front loaders to deal maximum damage. Return to Huadiv when the Rockbreaker is scrap metal for some scenes, including the return of Vanasha and the child king.

Freeze the Rockbreaker to increase your damage (left). It also persists if it goes underground (right).

Of course, the Shadow Carja aren’t going to let their prized king just get away without a fight, so you’ll be joined by Vanasha in stopping them. Before the enemies come, it seems you are forced to place a trap (the item kind) in the area. Once you do that, the first wave of enemies will spawn, consisting solely of three Shadow Carja, which means the first wave will be extremely easy. The second wave will come shortly after the first perishes, being made up of a single Shadow Carja and two Corrupted Watchers.

While things may have escalated a tiny bit, the Watchers are easy prey, corrupted ones at that. Using fire arrows on them will quickly turn them into scrap metal, offering a brief moment of peace. Before talking with Vanasha, lay down a lot of traps, as the next bout is going to be a doozy. After talking with Vanasha, a Corrupted Thunderjaw will show up as part of the third, and final, wave. While it is susceptible to fire more than normal ones, it is still a formidable opponent. Use tearblast arrows to knock the disc launchers off to use against it for the biggest damage. Once it’s dead, meet up with Vanasha at the shore to view more scenes and finish the quest.

Objective Reward
For helping the child king escape 9,330 XP / +1 Skill Points
