Having escaped the prison created by Solas, Rook prepares to infiltrate Minrathous with all of the allies he’s gathered throughout this arduous journey. Difficult choices will need to be made, and some fearsome foes taken down, as you look to liberate Minrathous and put a stop to Elgar’nan. This page will give you all the guidance you need to take the fight to the remaining Elvan God at the start of Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s finale.

Starting The Last Gambit¶
Following The Dragon and the Dreadwolf, a short main quest that involves tying up any last minute preparations at The Lighthouse following Rook’s escape from the prison. This is a good time to make a separate save, because as soon as you interact with the table, you’re about to make some major choices that impact the fate of your characters at the very beginning of The Last Gambit. Due to this, you can’t really prepare in advance your battle party as it will vary based on these very choices.
Choices: The Last Gambit¶
As mentioned above, the major choices for The Last Gambit take place at the very start of the quest, during the meeting. Rook will address all of the allies they’ve gathered and together, put forward a plan that will work during the raid on Minrathous. These choices will involve all Factions and every playable main character in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, as such, hopefully you made that save so that you can make changes if you don’t like the outcome you got.
There are three major choices to make here, and we won’t go over them all in detail here, there is a page that covers all of the choices for The Last Gambit in greater detail. If you want to be taken to an explanation for each of those three major choices, hit the links below:
What you choose here will impact the fate of these characters and Factions, although for the most part, should you have maxed out your Faction Strength and achieved Hero of the Veilguard status with your team, it’s hard to make a wrong choice here. Additionally, should everyone survive the final encounter, you’ll get a Trophy/Achievement.
Recover the Lyrium Dagger¶
Once your choices play out, regardless of the outcome, you’ll find yourself in control of Rook and the two other characters that were not selected for any of the tasks (for us, this was Neve and Emmrich). Your goal is a simple, but difficult one, you need to track down Solas and get the Lyrium Dagger back.
Head down the streets of Minrathous, dealing with Darkspawn and Venatori along the way, and eventually you’ll drop down into a courtyard. There are many Darkspawn you’ll need to deal with here, so put your Combos to use and take them down. Of Particular note here is the Alpha Emissary, who is weak to Fire and has a large Barrier you’ll need to pierce first. Once the final enemy falls, burst the Boil and head through the doorway to see the outcome of whoever you selected to the Venatori Mage assassination choice.
You’ll pick up control in the Hightown Markets, where you can find some basic lootables before climbing up the scaffholding and dropping down to be met with another group of Venatori. You’re not required to defeat these enemies, however, so if you find yourself already at Level 50, consider just running by them. As you head up the stairs, keep an eye on the edge to your right, there’s a chest containing some Gold. Press onward through the linear path and you’ll trigger a scene, running into Solas at last.
Keep Pushing Forward¶
After exchanging some pointed words at Solas following his latest deceit, you’ll begin accompanying him forward as he looks to find a way to stop Elgar’nan. As control resumes, you’ll find Solas just ahead of you and he will participate in the next few battles. As you may expect, Solas’s power is far above your own and will make these next battles far easier. You will be fighting stronger Darkspawn, but with Solas’s assistance, they should pose little threat. After the first group of enemies have been dealt with, check in the southern corner of Thalsian Court to discover a chest containing a weapon.
Continue following the linear path up the stairs, across the bridge, and down the street, dealing with the increases enemy presence. They’ll continue to be higher ranked enemies, but Solas’s assistance should mean that you have little to worry about. Most of these enemies can be skipped too, should there be no interest in XP, but once you reach Urthemiel Approach, you will be forced to clear out a group of enemies. Once defeated, you’ll find a large Blight Boil to burst, do so and head through.
Defeat Elgar’nan’s Wrath¶
At this point Solas takes his leave, handing you the Lyrium Dagger and taking the form of the Dread Wolf to deal with the Archdemon. It’s at this point that you’ll find the companion who was taken earlier, either Bellara or Neve, and you’ll need to look for a way to free them from Elgar’nan’s influence. Your first task is to deal with the group of Darkspawn that attack you, and then slide down the slope to trigger a scene. It looks like Elgar’nan is not going to make this easy for you and you’re going to have to forcefully get Bellara or Neve out of there.
While Elgar’nan’s Wrath is a construct like many you’ve faced before, this one has been twisted by the Blight, giving it deadlier attacks. It will often begin the battle by leaping toward you, causing an explosion where it lands so dodge away from it to leave it open and start working on depleting its Armor. When you see it pierce the ground with its weapon, get back, as it’s about to hit a large AoE around itself. On top of this, Elgar’nan’s Wrath will stomp the ground whenever you fight too closely, so pick your moments and don’t stay in for too long or you’re going to start taking heavy damage.
If you see Elgar’nan’s Wrath slightly glow, this means it’s charging up its Flame Beam attack and should you get caught in it, you’re going to take massive damage. Instead, use this moment to dodge behind it and you’ll leave it wide open, allowing you to really get some nice combos in on it. You’ll also need to pay attention to the Venatori that assist Elgar’nan’s Wrath during this battle, so try to take them down before it gets overwhelming.
Finally, look out for when it starts spinning its weapon around and walks toward you, this hits a wide radius and you can easily get caught in it if you’re trying to deal with the Venatori or Darkspawn reinforcements. Unlike Elgar’nan’s Wrath’s other attacks, there is no opening here, so keep your distance until it finishes.
One Last Breath¶
Once the battle is over, Bellara or Neve is safe (or as safe as they can be, given their condition), you’ll find yourself with brief moment of respite. Take the time to speak to all of your allies, and visit the room to give respect to the dead. There’s a chance to buy some last minute supplies and, should you have completed The Heart of Corruption and Regrets of the Dread Wolf, you can speak to Morrigan to obtain The Ultimate Salvation of Felassan rune, the most powerful one in the game that will make the final quest easier.
Once you’re finally ready to put an end to things, head for the back door to begin the final quest in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
