Gate of Pale Reflections Quest Location¶
You’re not going to be able to begin this quest until you progress the main quest to after the Completing the Veilguard quest, where the Hossberg Wetlands area will become available as an exploration zone. The Gate itself can be found in the Heights of Athim part of the Crossroads, an area rife with the Blight and multiple paths to take.
This one takes a bit of work to get to - the blighted passage itself is along the southeastern edge of the Heights of Athim (2F), but you can only get there by heading to the southern end of the place and taking a zipline, and before that you need to clear out some blight cysts. Following this, you’ll spot the Gate, so approach it to begin the Gate of Pale Reflections. If you check your journal when accepting this as early as you can, you’ll discover that you won’t be able to reach the area where the Champion is located for this quest yet.
Gate of Pale Reflections Champion Location¶
It’s going to be quite some time until you can reach the Champion for this gate, you need to gain access to the Hossberg Wetlands, which won’t happen until after the Completing the Veilguard quest, a short, simple cutscene, based quest, but kicks off the team’s search for more members. During this time, the Hossberg Wetlands is available as an exploration zone, an area where the Blight is rampant and the Grey Warden’s are attempting to push back.
Now that you have access to the area, make your way to the Solitude’s Edge Beacon located to the southeast of the map. Many Darkspawn will attack you here, so be sure to clear the area of any threats first and then when look at the back, you’ll see another large Cyst, burst this to fight the Champion.
Amarell the Unwoven Boss Guide¶
When it comes to the Gate Champions, this is the one that you should save for last, as it’s the highest Level one that you’ll face, weighing in at Level 35. Despite this, the area itself is rather kind to you, it’s a massive area and if you’ve cleared it off any threats, you’ll be able to dodge freely. Like with all Darkspawn, Amarell is weak to Fire and resistant to Necrotic damage, so you’ll want to avoid Lucanis and Emmrich if you can help it, and favor both Davrin and Taash. Amarell the Unwoven has many attacks available to him, which you can learn about below:
Darkness¶
Amarell will clad the area in darkness, making it difficult to see and preventing your Companions from acting with you in any way. He will usually start the battle by using this, so make sure you’re prepared and focus on avoiding him until you can see again.
Explosions¶
At any time, Amarell can cause Explosions around itself, this will then usually be followed up by another attack from its many attacks. If you see a large red AoE circle around it, dodge away from the circle.
Explosive Leap¶
When Amarell is at range, he can target you with an AoE circle and then leap to that position, causing an explosion in the process. As soon as you see the AoE circle, dodge out of the way, this can create an opening for you if you avoid it.
Explosive Ground Pound¶
Amarell will shoot off an explosion in a line, while also causing an explosion around itself. This is usually a very quick attack, so keep an eye on where the Champion is facing at all times so you can react to it.
Explosive Charge¶
Amarell will prime himself ready to cause an explosion and then charge at your direction, causing massive damage should he connect. If, on the other hand, he avoids you completely and comes into contact with a wall, it will momentarily stun him, leaving him open for an assault.
Amarell the Unwoven Boss Strategy¶
If you’ve already defeated the other Champion in this region, The Disciple-in-Ichor then you know how this battle will mostly go down, as the special trait of this Champion, its explosive nature, is almost exactly the same. That means you need to keep an eye on the AoE marker around Amarell at all times as he will cause explosions around himself at will.
What is different about this battle, however, is the fact that he can clad the area in Darkness and blind your teammates, a tactic he will use right from the start of the battle. Couple this with the fact that he can be very agile, and you’re going to need to be very careful during these moments. Forget about your offense during these periods and instead just focus on dodging his attacks until you can see again.
Much like the Disciple Champion, your best method of scoring some free hits on Amarell is by detonating Combos, the slowdown will allow you to get in close and deliver some powerful strikes. You can also stun him temporarily by dodging his Explosive Charge and letting him barrel straight into a wall. By this stage of the game, Amarell shouldn’t be too much of a challenge and once you defeat it, claim its Essence and open the Unique Chest it was hiding.
Gate of Pale Reflections Rewards¶
Now that you have the Champion’s Essence in your hands, return to the gate at the Crossroads to unseal the gate. This will end the quest and grant you access to the area beyond, which leads to the toughest Revenant that you need to defeat for the Heart of Corruption quest, just beware that this Revenant is Level 42.
