What Are Surveying Spots in Three Hopes?

Information about Surveying Spots in Fire Emblem Three Hopes, including how to unlock Surveying Spots, and what rewards you’ll get for doing so.

Surveying Spots are a feature on the War Map in Fire Emblem Three Hopes. The War Map functionally displays your objectives in each Chapter, and generally you’re charged with capturing regions by completing Side Quest battles. You can only invade regions adjacent to your Base Camp or to a previously captured region, with the overall goal being to work your way across the map to reach the region with the Main Quest battle. Completing the Main Quest battle will end the chapter.

As you complete Side Quest battles and conquer regions, however, numerous diversions and opportunities will present themselves, many of which, while not contributing directly to your advancement in the main questline, are still quite lucrative and worth doing. These include seeking out Anna’s shop, completing [Extra Quests] and [Paralogue Battles] and of course, the subject of this page, exploring Surveying Spots.

What Are Surveying Spots in Fire Emblem Three Hopes?

In addition to the big silver and gold icons representing Side Quests and Main Quests, respectively, you’ll also see other features peppered throughout various regions on the map, including keeps, houses, ruins, swamps, caves, tents, towers and other landmarks, geographical features and points of interest. These are Surveying Spots, and while their gameplay functionality is simple, there is a bit of variety involved.

Once you conquer a region by completing the Side Quest battle there, you can freely explore all the Surveying Spots in the region. Most of the time this merely involves selecting said Surveying Spot and taking whatever rewards it yields. These rewards commonly include Facility upgrade materials, ores used for repairing and forging weapons, fully functional weaponry, or more mundane resources like gold. Sometimes, however, these Surveying Spots can yield more interesting fare, including [Battalions], accessories, permanent stats or skill upgrades, morale boosts, Seals or extra Training Points and Activity Points.

Suffice to say it’s well worth your time to check out Surveying Spots in conquered regions. We would argue that it’s also worth clearing all the Side Quests in most Chapters just to obtain the rewards offered by their Surveying Spots, even at the potential cost of the Renown you’d gain by completing the Chapter’s Main Quest battle without conquering all the regions - the rewards gained by clearing the Side Quest battles and investigating a region’s Surveying Spots are usually worth the paltry Renown loss.

Of course, sometimes it’s not quite as simple as merely clearing a region’s Side Quest battle. Some Surveying Spots have secondary unlock requirements, usually clearing the region’s Side Quest battle with an S-Rank, scoring enough KO’s throughout the Chapter, or having a character of a specific class. Keep an eye on these requirements and keep in mind you can replay a Side Quest battle as many times as you need to in order to achieve an S-Rank. Once you complete the Chapter, however, you cannot return to claim any neglected Surveying Spots.

It’s also worth noting that you can sometimes find [Extra Battles] and Anna as Surveying Spots, although you’ll be able to choose between interacting with them and the Surveying Spot itself when they’re located at an unexplored Surveying Spot.
