Chen Loong Location and Boss Strategy¶
Before you can even begin this Quest, you’ll first need to reach Chapter 3 and proceed until you reach the North Shore of the Bitter Lake Shrine. The area opens up here greatly, you can head to the right of the Shrine and fight an optional battle against the Apramāṇa Bat, while going forward will let you press on with your journey. The way you want to go, however, is by heading left from the Shrine where you’ll spot a Loong in the water.
As you approach him, you’ll begin an optional battle against Chen Loong. The area you fight Chen Loong in is not ideal, but the battle itself isn’t a tough one. He will use many Shock-based attacks against you, such as a Swipe should you get too close, so be sure to dodge roll away from them as you begin your assault.
The main attack to watch out for is when Chen Loong floats in the air, this indicates he’s about to let out a barrage of Shock Orbs that will shoot toward you. You’ll only take light damage should you be struck, but if multiple hit you, it will add up. Chen Loong will also rain Lighting Bolts around him, you can see where these will strike before they land, so keep an eye on the area around you and move accordingly. As you take Chen Loong to around half HP, he will be able to shoot a beam of Lightning while in the air, this sweeps from left to right before he swoops in with a Thunder Dash. Keep away from the beam and then be ready to dodge to either side to avoid the follow-up attack.
The final attack he can use when he’s nearly defeated, he will slouch to the ground and let loose multiple tails all around him which hits a wide area, get away when you see him slump to the ground to avoid it. When it comes to the battle itself, use Shock resistance medicine to help against that Bane, and take advantage of any moment Chen Loong focuses on your boar ally (if fighting him as soon as you can). Immobilize is as useful as ever, as is A Pluck of Many, which, if you’ve upgraded it, can do most of the work for you. As a reward for this battle, you’ll bag some useful Cold Iron Leaves.
Xu Dog’s Resurrection Pill Location¶
Following his defeat, Chen Loong mentions he’s in great pain, and that only a Resurrection Pill from Xu Dog can save him. If you’ve already completed Xu Dog’s Medicine Making Quest, you’ll know exactly where to find him. Head back to a Shrine and travel to the Crouching Tiger Temple - Cellar Shrine to find him still here, working away at his medicines. Speak to him and choose the “Talk” option to have him hand over both the Fortifying Medicament Formula and the Special-made Bone-Strengthening Pellet, the very item Chen Loong is looking for.
Return to where you fought him and you’ll now find him standing by the nearby house. Speak to him and hand over the pill and in return, he’ll hand over the Ruyi Scroll, a very important item that will whisk you off to the Painted Realm.
Zodiac Village Features¶
You’ll find yourself in Zodiac Village following the scene, this is a special hub area free of enemies where all of the Zodiac Deities will gather. You’ll find that both Xu Dog and the Shen Monkey have permanently moved their services to this location, and if you head up the nearby stairs, you’ll find Chen Loong again. You’ll now be able to Deliver Seeds to him (that you have a chance to obtain from looting resources) and he will plant them, allowing you to return from time to time to harvest them.
Xu Dog will now hand over free medicine over time by selecting the Request Medicine option and in the back of the Village, you’ll meet a new Zodiac, the Yin Tiger. He acts as your blacksmith, allowing you to craft armor and weapons but more importantly, he’ll offer to upgrade existing armor. This is expensive at this stage of the game but will become useful later in the adventure, just note that you need higher-tier materials to do so.
Finally, should you agree to challenge the Yin Tiger to a battle and best him (this is by no means an easy feat), you’ll unlock the Ebon Flow Transformation, very useful! You’ll also unlock several Achievements, one for reaching Zodiac Village and one for Harvesting for the first time.
