Black Bear Guai is the last boss in Chapter 1 of Black Myth: Wukong. Naturally, Black Bear Guai is one of the more difficult bosses of the first chapter, especially when he adds fire to the mix. Found atop Bohdi Peak, you’ll want to come prepared for the upcoming challenge, especially with the Fireproof Mantle and Defense+ drinks. Read on to find out where you can find Black Bear Guai and how you can defeat him.

Black Bear Guai Location¶
Black Bear Guai is found at the summit of Bohdi Peak, which can be accessed after defeating Guai in his human form. Make your way up the mountain while dealing with the numerous enemies along the way. There will be lots of ranged enemies here, and we recommend taking them out before the other threats as you’ll take significant chip damage from them. At the summit, you’ll be treated to a cutscene before the battle begins.
Black Bear Guai Boss Strategy¶
Before you start the boss, here is what we recommend equipping against Black Bear Guai to make your life easier.
Equipment¶
Head | Body | Arms | Legs |
---|---|---|---|
Bronze Monkey Mask | Bronze Brocade Battlerobe | Bronze Armguard | Bronze Buskins |
You won’t have much choice regarding you armor in Chapter 1, but we recommend equipping the Bronze armor set obtained by defeating Elder Jinchi in the Secret Area, which is accessed by completing the Three Bells Quest. This armor set will deal additional damage to an enemy upon their immobilization when two pieces are equipped, and reduce the cooldown of Immobilization when four pieces are worn. Immobilization is a powerful skill, and you’ll want to be using it often in the latter part of the battle, so this set helps greatly. Note, that you may need to farm Silk to acquire all these pieces, if that is the case, follow our Yarn and Silk Farming Guide.
Curios, Spirit and Vessel¶
Curio 1 | Curio 2 | Spirit | Vessel |
---|---|---|---|
Cat Eye Beads | Agate Jar | Wandering Wight | Fireproof Mantle |
There isn’t much choice for Curios at the moment as you’ll only have two (three with Deluxe Edition) to choose from, however, the two listed above are both more useful than the deluxe Curios, so use the two above. Cat Eye Beads will offer you a higher Critical Hit chance, while the Agate Jar will increase your defense, both useful against the boss. For your Spirit, we recommend Wandering Might. It’ll give you an extra 20 Defense simply by equipping it, and the attack itself deals a decent amount of damage and a brief stun. The only bad thing about this Spirit is you need to be right next to the boss to use it, which will put you in danger.
The Fireproof Mantle feels like it was made with this battle in mind as it’ll significantly increase your burn resistance simply by having it equipped, and when used, it will give you immunity to it while also slowly increasing your Focus. Unfortunately, you’ll need to defeat the Elder Jinchi boss in the Secret Area, accessed by completing the Three Bells Quest linked above.
Useful Medicines¶
Potion | Effect |
---|---|
Evil Repelling Medicament | Considerably increases Damage Reduction for a long duration. |
Tiger Subduing Pellets | Moderately increases Damage for a long duration. |
Body-Cooling Powder | Removes the Burn State and significantly increases Burn Resistance for a short duration. |
All these medicines are a must-have for this boss fight. It’s obvious why the first two are useful, while the Body-Cooling Powder is good to remove Burn should you get afflicted by it. This isn’t as important if you have the Fireproof Vessel mentioned above, but you may still want to bring a couple anyway.
Black Bear Guai Attack List¶
Attack | Description | Counter |
---|---|---|
Slam | Guai will pound his fists into the ground twice. | Roll away from the attack to avoid taking damage. |
Charging Combo | Guai will run to the edge of the arena before charging at you while performing a combo. He’ll zip back and forth across the arena while using a couple of attacks each time. The final time he uses it, he’ll leap in the air and perform a back slam. | This is a difficult attack to avoid. Ideally, you’ll stand in the center of the arena and dodge toward him as the attack is about to connect, but the timing can be difficult. Make sure you punish him after avoiding the backslam as this will leave him open for a couple of seconds. |
3-Hit Combo | Guai will perform two swiping attacks before stamping down his foot. | Wait until the first attack is about to connect and dodge to perform a Perfect Dodge. Do this two more times to avoid the attacks. Running away is a valid strategy provided you have the stamina. |
Sweep Combo | This attack didn’t happen often for us, but after the second part of the 3-Hit combo above, Guai can perform a spinning sweep attack. | You’ll want to roll away to avoid this but it comes at you quickly, so you’ll need to have quick reflexes. |
5-Hit Combo | Similar to the 3-Hit Combo, Guai will start this attack by slamming his foot onto the ground. | Your best bet against this attack is to get some distance by running away from him. If you’re good at timing your dodges, press dodge each time the attack is about to connect to Perfect Dodge, but this is risky. Alternatively, use Immobilize before he starts the combo to get some distance or to reposition. |
Charging Slam | Guai will take a few steps backward before charging at you, finishing off with a backhand swipe and slam. | Dodge to the side as the first attack is about to land. Dodge a second time after avoiding the swipe to dodge the slam. |
Jumping Stomp | Guai will jump in the air before stomping his feet at your location. | Wait just before the stomp is about to connect before dodging to perform a Perfect Dodge. Alternatively, keep rolling until the attack is finished. |
Invisible Leap | Guai will run to the back of the arena and turn into black dust before leaping at you and throwing a punch. | Wait until he’s about to hit you with the punch before dodging to either side. |
Backslam | Guai will leap into the air and slam down at your location with his back. | Roll away from the impact and punish Guai with some attacks, as this will leave him vulnerable for a few seconds. |
Twisting Elbow Drop | If you’re attacking Guai from behind, sometimes he’ll fall backward while performing an elbow drop. | Feel free to attack him from behind, but be ready to dodge at a moment’s notice. |
Fire Slam | At 50% onwards, Guai will slam his fists into the ground, unleashing fire spouts across the arena. | Roll toward Guai as the slam lands to avoid the initial attack and then make sure you don’t walk into the fire spouts that persist for a few seconds. If you roll away from Guai, you could roll into a fire spout. |
Fire Charge | At 50% onwards, Guai will have fire attached to all his attacks. This particular attack will have him zoom across the arena back and forth before finishing it up with a slicing melee attack which deals fire damage. | This is one of the more difficult attacks to avoid due to having to keep track of him. Wait in the center of the arena, and each time he zips across, dodge. He will do this five times, with the fifth charge being the melee attack. As always, waiting until the last second will perform a Perfect Dodge. |
Lunging Fire Swipe | Guai will lunge and swipe at you with his burning claw. | Guai will lunge across the arena and perform a swipe attack with his burning claws. |
Boss Fight¶
Similar to the previous fight you had with Guai, you’ll notice a lot of attacks he used in the previous battle with him, but with some new attacks mixed in. Guai is extremely agile considering his side and will continually dash around the arena performing multi-hit combos and slams. Despite saying that, the safest (not really safe) place against him is up close. You will be hit with multiple attacks, but most of them are easily avoidable by dodging when the attack is about to connect to grant you a Perfect Dodge.
The idea is to keep attacking Guai with your light attacks while dodging whenever he attacks. You can normally get 2–3 attacks of Guai before you’ll need to press your dodge button, so you’ll want to weave the dodge into your attack combo. For this reason, we recommend getting the Composure skill under the Stamina tree in Foundation, as this will stop dodges from interrupting your combos. This makes it easier to build up your Focus to unleash a powerful attack. Try saving your focus until it’s full before using, as it leaves you open and you could get punished.
Like most boss fights, the hardest part of the battle is the last half, and it’s no different here. Save your mana/spells and transformation until the boss is under 50% as the first half is easy enough after a couple of tries to avoid. For your stance, you should be using Thrust Stance if you have it, or Smash Stance if you don’t. The latter allows you to perform a retreating attack by pressing the heavy attack button after a light combo. This will help you avoid some of Guai’s attacks without trying. The Smash Stance will deal more damage, but its finishing strike can allow Guai to attack you while you’re in animation, wasting your Focus. Throughout the battle, Guai will rest for a couple of seconds, normally by the back of the arena. This is a great time to pummel him with some attacks.
At 50%, Guai will add fire to the arena and his attacks. For the most part, the attacks will stay the same or have a little variance, but the same rules apply to avoiding them. If you have the Fireproof Vessel, now is the time to use it as it will grant you burn immunity while gradually filling up your Focus allowing you to deal Focus strikes more often. However, if you don’t get it, make sure you have enough body-cooling powders to remove the burn state should you get hit with them. Failing that, keep rolling to remove it. If you saved your mana like suggested, use Immobilize and Cloud Step to avoid some of his attacks while dealing significant damage to him. Immobilize is best used when he’s about to perform a multi-hit combo, and Cloud Step is best used to avoid a slam. Finally, save the Red Tides transformation for the second half of the battle, as it’ll still deal a nice chunk of damage to Guai despite it being fire.
That’s it for the Guai boss fight. Stay close and keep attacking Guai while dodging every 2–3 hits. Save your spells, spirits, vessel, and transformation for the second half of the battle, and remember that most of Guai’s attacks will be multi-hit attacks or a slam. Upon defeating Guai, Chapter 1 will conclude, and you’ll get rewarded with the Craving Eyes Relic.
