First Meeting (Chapter 1) - Back Hills Shrine, Bamboo Grove¶
Your first meeting with the Horse Guai is near the Back Hills Shrine in Bamboo Grove. Teleport to the Shrine and follow the path down. As soon as you get to the bottom, turn left and go into the cave, where you’ll find the Horse Guai sitting down to your right. Exhaust his dialogue, and he’ll move on after your next rest.
Second Meeting (Chapter 2) - Village Entrance, Sandgate Village¶
The next meeting with the Horse Guai is in Sandgate Village. From the Village Entrance Shrine (the first shrine of Chapter 2), head across the gap via the small wooden bridge and hang a right past the small shrine-like building atop the hill. Go past the structure and head left, where you’ll find an enemy with a shield in front of a building. Defeat the enemy if you must, and follow the building around to the left before going up a small slope.
Follow the path into the village, where you’ll find a large shrine structure to your right. This is in the same area as the Earth Wolf side boss. The Horse Guai will be tied up to the front right pillar of the structure. Once again, exhaust his dialogue, rest, and he’ll move on.
Third Meeting (Chapter 3) - Temple Entrance Shrine, New Thunderclap Temple¶
Chapter 3 is large, and you won’t reach the New Thunderclap Temple for a while, so progress through the chapter until you do. From the Temple Entrance Shrine, head through the doors of the temple, go through the doors, and walk past the left side of the statue. Follow this path to the back of the temple, and exit outside.
Continue forward, head up the stairs, and walk straight on until you can take the stairs down to the left where you’ll find another building you can enter. Go into the building, up the stairs to the right, and take these to the top where you can exit the building. Turn left, follow the path, and check behind the fifth wooden pillar to the left, where you’ll find the Horse Guai leaning up against it. As always, exhaust his dialogue, rest, and he’ll move on.
Fourth Meeting (Chapter 4) - Middle Hollow Shrine, Webbed Hollow¶
Once again, you’ll need to work your way through Chapter 4 until you reach the Middle Hollow Shrine in the Webbed Hollow. From the Shrine, turn right and follow the path until you reach a torch on your left. Drop down the platforms into the open area, where you’ll fight Centipede Guai.
Defeat the boss, obtain the Spirit, and follow the path onward at the back of the area. Follow the path down the slope and take a left at the bottom to find a yellow cocoon at the end. Attack the cocoon to release the Horse Guai, granting you a short scene. Exhaust his dialogue, rest, and he’ll move on.
Defeat Keeper of the Flaming Mountains (Chapter 5) - Valley Entrance Shrine, Furnace Valley¶
The Valley Entrance Shrine is the first Shrine in Furnace Valley. When you get to the Shrine, continue onwards until you reach the two large pillars. Make your way down into the magma area and continue onwards until you go up again and follow the path until you reach the Cloudy Mist, Misty Cloud boss fight.
Defeat the boss, head up the stairs, and you’ll run into the main boss, Keeper of the Flaming Mountains. If you didn’t talk to the Horse Guai in Chapter 4, now is your last chance before you fail the quest. Defeat the boss and return to the Valley Entrance Shrine.
Final Meeting (Chapter 5) - Valley Entrance Shrine, Furnace Valley¶
From the Valley Entrance Shrine, follow the path forward, and go left as soon as you can. Continue onwards, head right after the pillar, and follow the path down into the magma. Go through the area while heading right, and you’ll come to a statue where you’ll see the Horse Guai one last time.
As you were probably expecting, you’ll have to fight the Horse Guai, and foil his plans. After defeating him, inspect the statue to find a whip hanging out of it. Interact with the whip and “Pull Forcefully” to acquire the whip, resulting in the Dark Thunder Transformation.
