How to Find & Catch Thundurus

By
Vincent Lau

This page explains how to catch "Thundurus" IconThundurus in Pokémon Legends "Arceus" IconArceus (PLA).

How to Unlock Thundurus

After defeating Giratina at the Temple of Sinnoh during the postgame, you can receive Request 94 “Incarnate Forces of Hisui” from Cogita upon entering Galaxy Hall. This will make Thundurus appear in Cobalt Coastlands

(1 of 2) Search the waters north of Sand’s Reach during a thunderstorm.

More precisely, Thundurus can be found roaming north of Sand’s Reach during thunderstorms. It’s in the same general area as the alpha Gyarados. You can quickly get there by surfing north from the Coastlands Camp. Keep your eyes peeled from a strange object surrounded by white-colored wind.

How to Catch Thundurus

Like its Incarnate brethren, Thundurus can be a pain in the backside to deal with. When Thundurus sees you, he will fly backwards very fast and may create tornadoes to damage you and block your path. To make matters worse, Thundurus is roaming in the sea, so you’ll need to chase him while riding Basculegion.

(1 of 2) Take advantage of the slowed down time when jumping and throwing to chuck stuff at Thundurus.

If you’re skilled and/or daring, you can give chase on Basculegion. Use Basculegion’s jumps to hop over the tornadoes and throw Pokémon or items at Thundurus in mid-air. While in mid-air, holding ZL to ready a Pokémon/item will slow down time. Giving you plenty of time to aim. However, if Thundurus has seen you, he may dash off before the Pokémon/item lands.

(1 of 2) Use Stealth Spray to conceal your presence.

Use Stealth Spray to conceal your presence. (left), Doing so will allow you to tail Thundurus without being noticed. (right)

You may find it easier to take the subtle approach. Craft some Smoke Bombs and Stealth Spray or buy them from a general store. When you see Thundurus, apply the Stealth Spray before he notices you. From here, surf behind Thundurus and throw a Pokémon/item at him. So long as you’re not in front of Thundurus, he shouldn’t notice. If in doubt, hide yourself with Smoke Bombs.

Regardless, after dispelling Thundurus’s shield, he will roar and re-apply his shield. Don’t give up; repeat this two more times.

On the third successful throw, Thundurus will be stunned after his shield disappears. Now throw a Pokémon to trigger a battle. You could throw a Poké Ball too, but if it fails, you’ll have redo everything from step one. While Thundurus is stunned, if you’re positioned behind him, you can catch him unawares during battle/catching.

Battling Thundurus

(1 of 2) Fighting Thundurus is the easy part.

During Pokémon battles, Thundurus can use its new signature move Wildbolt Storm, which deals Electric-type damage and may inflict paralysis. He can also use Extrasensory (Psychic), Crunch (Dark) and Thunder (Electric). Obviously, Ground-types are immune to his Electric moves. However, it’s more important to have Pokémon with False Swipe to safely reduce its HP.

How to Change Thundurus into His Therian Form

(1 of 2) Make Thundurus stare into the Reveal Glass…

Make Thundurus stare into the Reveal Glass… (left), …to make him swap between Incarnate and Therian forms. Talk about a radical makeover! (right)

When you’ve captured all four Incarnates and reached Research Level 10 for them, you can report back to Cogita at the Ancient Retreat. She’ll give you the Reveal Glass key item that will allow you to swap between their current Incarnate forms and their beast-like Therian forms.
