Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II

MW2 Console Vs PC - Which Should You Choose?

By
Paul McNally

’Tis the season to play Call of Duty. As regularly as Halloween and the rest of the Holiday season come around annually, so, it seems, we get a new Call of Duty game these days at the end of October.

Now, with more people having been able to get their hands on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5s which version should you go for, especially if you already have a gaming PC in your set-up alongside any of the latest consoles?

Keyboard And Mouse Vs Controller

A controversial way to start. PC players will sneer at the prospect of using a controller to play an FPS. Hardcore players brought up on the grit of Counter-Strike and the like balk at the lack of twitch-based precision that can be achieved with the flick of a mouse wrist.

Is Modern Warfare 2 Crossplay?

Call of Duty Modern Warfare II is indeed crossplay, meaning you can play with your buddies regardless of the system they are on. However, most serious players generally turn off the option citing the difference in required playstyles between PC and console as too large to make a fair game of things. A little bit of that is snobbery and it is good that it is still there if you have friends on different platforms as we all do.

The glint of a sniper rifle, but he can see yours too, so who kills who?

However, for no reasonable reason at this stage, disabling crossplay has also been turned off for Xbox and PC players at the moment. The community isn’t happy so it might change in a forthcoming patch, but if you want to remove the keyboard and mousers from your life right now, you will need a PlayStation to do it.

Does The PC Version Of MW2 Have Hackers Spoiling It?

There is generally a paranoia about PC games being riddled with hackers spoiling all the fun for everybody and it is true that some people like to run the risk of hacking their play to get ranked faster. We don’t see the point ourselves, especially if you have paid big bucks for a game, but at the moment in MW2, there are a few bugs waiting to be patched out that can make it appear as f you are up against a hacker, when really it is a player taking an advantage of an in-game issue rather than using an actual hack.

There is one such flaw currently where using the Riot Shield in a certain way makes you invincible and this is becoming more widely known so we would expect Infinity to patch it out soon. But basically, if you see somebody on a 30-kill streak and seemingly able to walk through bullets, we bet they are carrying a Riot Shield.

Which Community Is More Toxic? PC or Console?

Many people will tell you that Call of Duty has one of the most toxic communities in the world of gaming. It can certainly be a very unfriendly place, especially if you are just starting out, aren’t very good, and playing on your own. We reckon though that because the size of the playerbase means you are potentially more likely to run into idiots more often, that doesn’t actually make it any more toxic than the likes of Apex Legends where you are just as likely to have to endure abuse screamed down a headset by a child.

In our anecdotal experience with this particular game, we have definitely found the console user base more annoying than the PC lobbies and more aggressive to PC players than vice versa. But your experience could well differ.

Enemy activity aplenty down the far end of this Mexican street.

Console Or PC? Which To Buy If You Have Both Systems?

Call of Duty, as a series, has been leaning towards consoles for a couple of iterations now. The PC version can still look amazing if you have a decent graphics card, and the ability to easily play with a keyboard and mouse would always swing it for some people but more and more design choices seem to be made with the consoles in mind.

Something else to bear in mind however is that for the Vault Edition of MW2 the console versions are $15/£15 more expensive than the respective PC version on Steam or Battle.net. There’s no obvious reason why, but if you want the Playstation or Xbox it it going to cost you more cash.
