Remember when Microsoft bought Activision and half of the console world went crazy thinking that would be the end of the Call of Duty franchise on the PlayStation and it would soon be an Xbox exclusive?
Well, Modern Warfare II is the first CoD game to hit the streets since that takeover (which still, at the time writing is far from complete) so what does that mean? Well, we know PlayStation has the game and Xbox has the game alongside its PC counterparts, but can you play it for free using Microsoft’s gaming subscription platform, Game Pass?

Is Modern Warfare 2 On Game Pass?¶
(There are) restrictions on the ability of Activision Blizzard to place Call of Duty titles on Game Pass for a number of years: Phil Spencer - Head of Xbox.
Perhaps disappointingly for many at this stage unfortunately Modern Warfare 2 isn’t available on Game Pass. This has at least managed to avoid any faux outrage from gamers while also maintaining a healthy triple AAA profit for Activision, as Infinity Ward’s offering has certainly gone down well initially.
When news of the deal broke it seemed obvious that one of the key reasons for getting the buyout over the line was getting CoD onto Game Pass, but Xbox Head Honcho Phil Spencer was recently quoted as saying: ‘restrictions on the ability of Activision Blizzard to place Call of Duty titles on Game Pass for a number of years’, is currently part of an agreement the company holds with Sony.
At first glance, this would seem to be a huge problem, but either Microsoft are confident that they can negotiate around this, or is simply playing the long game knowing that they will be able to bring the library to the service at some point in the future.
For now though there is the potential that the game may arrive in the following months - after all the deal isn’t even signed off yet due to various legal ramifications. It may well be the picture is clearer by the time the next Call of Duty release arrives in 2023.
No sign of CoD MW2 on Game Pass yet, but this could change in the future.
How Much Is Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare II?¶
Now we have established that CoD MWII is going to hit you in the pocket, what are you going to have to pay to get involved?
There are two editions of the game - Standard and Vault with the Standard coming in around the $69.99/£59.99 mark unless you can find a discount somewhere.
The Vault Edition is a little different as it offers you :
- Season 1 Battle Pass and 50+ Tier Skips
- Ghost Legacy Pack
- Red Team 141 Legacy Pack
- FJX Cinder Weapon Vault
- Red Team 141 Ghost Operator for Call of Duty: Mobile
However, for no apparent reason, there is a considerable difference in price between the console and PC versions.
