Best Level Up Stats to Choose in Sea of Stars

By
Jarrod Garripoli

The indie Japanese RPG, Sea of Stars, is an homage to JRPGs of yesteryear, with a lot of homage to classics like Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG. In fact, one of the things that Sea of Stars takes from the latter is the ability to choose a random stat increase upon leveling up your characters. This page will focus on what the stats do, as well as the best options to pick whenever you level up in the game.

You’ll be able to choose a bonus stat increase each time you level up.

Types of Stats in Sea of Stars

Every character in Sea of Stars will have six basic stats for them. During level-ups, characters will randomly gain stats in each of those six stats, then you will be able to choose a stat to level up further. While you have six stats, you only get to choose from one of four options.

  • Health Points (HP): Your character’s life. Should this reach zero, then they will be Knocked Out (KO). The number of stars above their head indicates the number of turns required before they revive with half HP. If all characters become KO’ed in a battle, that will be a game over.
  • Mana Points (MP): Needed to use your Skills. All characters are able to replenish MP by using their normal attacks. There are accessories that will allow you to recover MP with other actions, but those are only for the character with that accessory equipped.
  • Attack (ATK): This stat affects how much damage you do with physical attacks. The higher it is, the more damage you will do.
  • Defense (DEF): Affects how much damage you take from physical attacks. As is the case, the higher the number, the more damage you will mitigate.
  • Magic Attack (M. ATK): Just the Attack stat, but with magic instead.
  • Magic Defense (M. DEF): Just the Defense stat, but with magic instead.

Which Stats to Choose on Level Up in Sea of Stars

Now that you’ve had a brief lesson on the whole stats system, you may be wondering what to choose upon leveling up. Well, the choice is mainly yours and it entirely depends on the character and situation. If you find a character suffering a lot of damage in battles, then you may want to opt for the more defensive stats, like HP, Defense, and Magic Defense. In fact, this may be a good idea at the beginning of the game, simply to make yourself sturdier in fights.

The same is also true for those suffering from a lack of dealing damage, which would mean choosing Attack or Magic Attack. MP is a bit of an outlier, as your characters don’t usually gain too much during the course of the game. MP is also extremely useful, too, since the more you have, the more you will be able to use skills without needing to resort to normal attacks. It’s even more important when you realize that if you don’t utilize the Live Mana mechanic (this isn’t available until a little bit into the game), then you will have to rely on Skills for breaking the elemental Locks.
