How To Unlock

Capture at least one of every fiend in the Cavern of the Stolen Fayth:

Strategy

The Don Tonberry is a pretty simple enemy, and pretty much follows the pattern of other Tonberries in the game. It will start the battle far from your characters, then spend each of its first four turns moving towards them. Once it moves four times, it will then pick a target at random and stab them with its knife. However, if you target Don Tonberry while he’s farther away, it will counter with Karma, which damages the person who targeted it. The damage done by Karma is equal to the number of enemies defeated by that character, times 100. So, if a character defeated 1,000 enemies, then Karma will deal the maximum of 99,999 damage. Don Tonberry will stop using Karma once it has moved four times. Auto-Phoenix is a good idea to have on at least two party members for this battle.

AP Grinding

The best thing about Don Tonberry is that it is extremely useful in grinding out AP for your characters. To do this, you only need to place Overdrive -> AP on a weapon and set their Overdrive Mode to Stoic/Comrade. The ideal setup involves putting one character on Stoic (the one who’s defeated the most fiends) and the other two on Comrade. Only the character with Stoic will attack Don Tonberry, causing it to counter with Karma and all characters will gain Overdrive, which will turn into AP. Overdrive -> AP can be customized using 10 Doors to Tomorrow, which you get 99 of for unlocking Catastrophe in the Monster Arena.

You can enhance the AP received by adding Double/Triple AP to the weapon, as well as Double/Triple Overdrive. Note that One-Eye can drop Triple AP weapons, which can have two empty slots. These are the perfect weapons for customizing into AP Grinding weapons. You can get Double Overdrive items by finding all of the Al Bhed Primers, then talking to Rin on the airship, and Triple Overdrive items by bribing the [Sand Worm] (https://www.gamerguides.com/final-fantasy-x-hd/guide/bestiary/bikanel/sand-worm “Sand Worm”) (900,000 gil for around 15).
