How to Complete the Flawless Muspelheim Trial in God of War Ragnarok¶
The Flawless Muspelheim trial is potentially one of the more difficult ones of the initial six. This is because you need to make sure that you’re not hit at all by any enemy, since if you’re hit even once you will fail the trial. If this happens, all enemies will despawn and you will have to interact with the sword monument again to begin the trial from the start. There is no time limit to this trial, but you will need to defeat 15 enemies without being hit to complete it. You will be facing a variety of enemies including Raiders, Nightmares, Draugr and Draugr Brutes, and finally an elite Gradungr.
How to Defeat the Gradungr¶
The elite Gradungr is a kind of beast that resembles a bull, and it’s likely to be the one enemy that causes you most trouble during this trial. It is an extremely aggressive enemy that will charge you constantly, so you’ll need to be ready to block, parry, or dodge multiple attacks in a row, while attempting to damage it yourself so that you can end the fight quickly. The good news is that the order of the spawns during this trial is always the same, so you’ll see the Gradungr spawning as the 12th enemy each time, giving you sufficient warning to prepare for its approach. If it were just you and the Gradungr in the arena, things would be easier, but you will also need to contend with a couple of ranged enemies at the same time.
If you use the tactic mentioned in the tip above, this will give you enough time to focus on killing the ranged enemies which are stationed in positions that you can’t reach with your melee attacks, as shown in the screenshots below. You can kill them by launching your Leviathan Axe at them multiple times, but the Draupnir Spear is also effective here, especially since you can detonate the spears once you’ve hit an enemy with a few of them, killing it while you focus on doing something else.
When it comes to killing the Gradungr, you can do this using regular melee or ranged attack combos, but you should find it much easier if you spam most of your highly damaging Light or Heavy Runic Attacks at them all at once. This will at least take a good chunk of their health, and ideally kill them outright if you position the attacks properly. The main thing you need to be concerned about here is killing the Gradungr as soon as possible, before it gets a chance to hit you, while also avoiding the incoming projectiles from some of the ranged enemies if they’re still alive.
You will find that most of the attacks used by the Gradungr can be blocked or parried with your shield. If you’re not confident with parrying, the Stone Wall Shield is an excellent option since it allows you to block multiple attacks in a row. However, keep in mind that you still won’t be able to block red ring attacks with this shield, so you’ll need to dodge those instead. Alternatively, you can interrupt them by using a Runic Attack or Relic / Sword hilt of your own just as you see the attack animation begin, but this is more risky than simply dodging.
It may take a few attempts for you to complete this trial, but so long as you get a good idea of when to expect specific types of enemies, and how to kill them quickly while avoiding their attacks, you should be fine. The main concerns here are dealing with the ranged enemies as soon as possible to avoid unexpected projectiles. If you keep getting hit over and over again, it may be helpful for you to record your gameplay, then watch it back to see how and where you’re being hit. You can then focus on avoiding the particular attacks that may be catching you out repeatedly.
