New Combat Options

This page will detail some of the new combat options for God of War Ragnarok.

Combat was one of the biggest features in God of War (2018), focusing on a more crunchy feel, than with the original set of games with Kratos. Of course, it’s obvious that a sequel will expand on the number of combat options for Kratos and Atreus. The Leviathan Axe and Blades of Chaos will return once again, but they will be getting some new abilities that weren’t in the previous game. For example, the Triangle button was used to recall the Leviathan Axe whenever you threw it, and it didn’t really do anything if you already have the axe in your hands.

One of the new shields will allow you to parry incoming attacks

In Ragnarok, pressing the Triangle button while holding the Leviathan Axe will apply a Frost Awaken effect to your next attack, whether it’s ranged or melee. To add on to this, pressing R1 will perform a Frozen Breach attack, which is an arching, wide attack that will apply Frost to any enemy it manages to hit. Additionally, you can toss the Leviathan Axe with the Frost Awaken effect to perform Frozen Spike, which will cause the axe to create a frost explosion whenever it hits. It’s just a minor touch that gives Kratos more opportunities in battle. It goes without saying that the Blades of Chaos got a similar treatment, with the Triangle button giving him the Flame Whiplash ability, giving those weapons a fiery touch.

New Shields

Kratos’ offensive options aren’t the only thing to get something new in God of War Ragnarok. Instead of just a single shield throughout the journey, Kratos will have some new shields to equip, which give him more options in battle. The Dauntless Shield is one for those that like to spice things up, as it allows you to parry attacks, setting up for a devastating counter. On the other end, the Stonewall Shield is more for players who like to turtle and hide behind their defenses. This shield won’t allow you to parry, but you will absorb the damage you receive. Once enough has been built up, you will be able to release the absorbed damage as a shockwave on your enemies.
