Frost Phantom Boss Fight in The Forbidden Sands

By
Scott Peers

This page details how to defeat the Frost Phantom boss fight in The Forbidden Sands region of Alfheim. We’ll cover how to stun the Frost Phantom by hitting its Runic Core, and how to destroy the obelisks that it summons.

Where to Find the Frost Phantom Boss in The Forbidden Sands of Alfheim

This boss isn’t mentioned at all until you stumble upon it in The Forbidden Sands. You’ll find it in the eastern part of The Forbidden Sands, just southeast from The Burrows, as shown in the screenshot below.

How to Defeat the Frost Phantom in God of War Ragnarok

Frost Phantom Attacks

The first thing you should do when the Frost Phantom spawns is get out of its melee range while you observe the basic attacks that it’s capable of. The attacks usually come in the form of a ground slam and a tail swipe, although the amorphous shape of the Frost Phantom can make it difficult to see when the animations for these attacks are occurring. If you step back while you watch it attack a few times using its special moves, you should get a feel for how far you need to move to avoid them. You can avoid almost all of the attacks from the Frost Phantom just by dodging away from or to the side of it, even in melee range.

The most important thing to keep in mind when attempting to anticipate and avoid attacks from the Frost Phantom is that it will usually raise its entire body just before executing one. The most damaging attacks are indicated by a yellow or red ring. The former can be blocked or parried with your shield, but the latter will need to be dodged unless you’re able to interrupt the animation with a special ability of your own. In the later stages of the fight, the Frost Phantom will begin to chain attacks more frequently, especially the ground slam. At this point you should be careful not to run back into melee range too quickly after the initial slam.

Hit the Runic Core on the Frost Phantom

Once you’ve got a feel for the attack patterns that the Frost Phantom will frequently use, you can start hitting its Runic Core, which essentially acts as the head of the beast. You need to hit this with either ranged attacks (such as Leviathan Axe throws) or with melee attacks. You’ll probably find it generally safer just to throw your axe at the Runic Core, but you’ll inflict more damage if you try to hit it with melee attacks instead. You can use whatever Light Runic Attacks and Heavy Runic Attacks that you have available to inflict massive damage, so be sure to use these at the start of the fight to maximize the number of potential uses throughout.

(1 of 3) You can block or parry yellow ring attacks, but you’ll need to time it properly.

Stagger and Stun the Frost Phantom

As you hit the Runic Core, you’ll notice that the Frost Phantom is sustaining stun damage. You’ll need to keep hitting it until its stun damage bar is full, at which point you’ll be able to attack one of the three obelisks that will spawn in the area. If you destroy one of these, it will inflict actual damage to the Frost Phantom.

At certain points throughout the fight, Mimir and Atreus / Freya will note when the Frost Phantom has been staggered, at which point the Runic Core will glow slightly more and you’ll see its head fall to the ground. This is your chance to get into melee range and hit it without fear of retaliation, since it can’t do anything in this state. However, you’ll need to be ready to avoid any special attacks that the Frost Phantom might use as soon as it recovers from being staggered.

Once you’ve fully damaged the Frost Phantom’s stun bar, you can throw your Leviathan Axe at the nearby obelisk until it’s destroyed, as shown in the screenshot below. This will reduce its health by one of the large health bars. After some time the Frost Phantom will reappear and you’ll need to damage it enough for the stun bar to be filled again, then destroy the next obelisk located on the tower behind you, as shown in the image below. Repeat this process for the final obelisk to deplete all of the Frost Phantom’s health, then all you need to do is Stun Grab it using DualSense-R3 to finish it off.

You’ll get a bunch of materials as a reward from the fight, but you’ll also obtain the Alfheim’s Honor enchantment, which can be slotted into the Amulet of Yggdrasil. You can see our page on Amulet of Yggdrasil Enchantments for more information.

(1 of 4) You can destroy the first obelisk with ranged attacks.
