Dragon's Dogma 2

The Best Vocation in Dragon's Dogma 2

By
Echo Apsey

One of the first choices you will need to make in Dragon’s Dogma 2 is your Vocation. This is an important initial choice as it determines your starting playstyle, weapons, armor, and stats. However, you won’t have to wait too long until you can unlock new Vocations or swap your first one out for the other basic ones. So, which one should you choose initially for your main character and your pawn? Which Vocation in Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the best overall?

After several dozen hours spent in Vermund and Battahl, we have a great idea of which class you will want to start with to create a good team dynamic between yourself and your pawn. Plus, we also have a suggestion for the best Vocation overall and the one you will want to level up as soon as you unlock it in Vermund.

Best Starting Vocation In Dragon’s Dogma 2

The best-starting Vocation in Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the "Thief" iconThief or the "Fighter" iconFighter. Both of these Vocations focus on melee attacks and dealing damage up close, rather than from afar. Ranged combat is particularly tricky to get the hang of initially due to a lack of lock-on in the game, so being able to land hit after hit with a sword or set of daggers and dodge out the way will be more effective for most players.

Both of these Vocations are also familiar to the classes and builds you will find in other action games and RPGs, so if you are familiar with the genres then you should be right at home. The Thief is able to stealth around easily and avoid enemies, while the Fighter has the advantage of being able to block attacks, negate fall damage by landing with their shield, and parry. So, depending on your preference, you will want to opt for the one that fits your preferred style of play.

(1 of 2) The Thief is sneaky, fast, and capable of pulling off strong, high-damage attacks on weak spots.

Best Vocation for Your Pawn in Dragon’s Dogma 2

Alongside choosing your initial starting vocation, you will be able to select your main Pawn’s Vocation, and our choice for the best Pawn Vocation in Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the "Archer" iconArcher or the "Mage" iconMage. With your main vocation being focused on melee combat, having a ranged support alongside you at all times is incredibly valuable and the Archer or Mage is the best option depending on if you want to focus on DPS or support for your pawn.

If you want to be able to heal yourself and your team, then choose the Mage Vocation as it has the ability to buff your damage, increase your resilience, and heal your party in the midst of combat without using curative items. However, the Archer is able to deal a ton of damage quickly with rapid-fire arrows and use a variety of different arrow types to set enemies on fire, weaken them, or freeze them. This can be incredibly useful against the much stronger bosses you will find lurking in the open world and in the cave systems in Battahl and Vermund.

(1 of 2) The Archer is capable of striking flying enemies and staying out of the chaos of a fight up close.

Best Endgame Vocation in Dragon’s Dogma 2

The best endgame Vocation in Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the "Mystic Spearhand" iconMystic Spearhand. It is easily the most effective class in the game with powerful abilities that can deal an immense amount of damage to small enemies and bosses. It also has solid ranged capabilities with a ranged lunge, a long-range spear attack that fires out a shot of damage on your target called "Magike Sperepelote" iconMagike Sperepelote, and regular ranged attacks as a part of its melee combos.

Pressing heavy attack during a combo will fire out a blast of energy when the attack finishes, allowing you to hit enemies just outside of melee range. The class also has the ability to drop down onto enemies with "Skiedragoun's Fangtooth" iconSkiedragoun’s Fangtooth and cast a shield to protect yourself for a short period of time. All of this makes the class incredibly versatile and easy to pick up. However, there is also a high skill ceiling as you can pull off crazy combos and team attacks thanks to its wide variety of options and playstyles. To find out how to get the class, our guide on how to unlock the Mystic Spearhand Vocation in Dragon’s Dogma 2 should help.

The Mystic Spearhand is the best option for a Vocation once you get past the initial few hours of the game.

That covers our picks for the best Vocations in Dragon’s Dogma 2.
