Dragon's Dogma 2

How to Escape Prison (Gaol) – Dragon's Dogma 2

By
Scott Peers

There are times in "Dragon" iconDragon’s Dogma 2 when you’ll find yourself in trouble with the law of the land. This can happen in any realm, whether it be Vermund or Battahl, but it’s most likely to happen in the former first. There’s a specific quest – The Caged Magistrate – during which you’ll need to visit the dungeon prison cells in "Vernworth" iconVernworth, the capital city of Vermund, to help an important NPC escape. It’s not entirely obvious at first, especially since the quest doesn’t tell you, but you can enter the prison undetected so long as you’re wearing the Marcher armor. However, if you enter wearing your regular armor or civilian clothes, you’ll be attacked by the guards and they’ll throw you in gaol. On this page, we’ll show you a few different methods for escaping prison, and how to get your gear back in the process.

There are a few ways to escape prison (gaol) in Dragon’s Dogma 2, but the sewers are the easiest and cheapest.

Escaping Prison in Dragon’s Dogma 2

So, you’ve found yourself stuck in a prison cell and there’s no way to reload a save without losing more progress than you’re willing to trade. What can you do? Well, there are a few different ways to escape prison, one of which involves the use of gold. The other two require either the use of a Goal Key or smashing through the walls of the cell. We’ll explain all three methods in more detail below.

Bribe the Guard With 10,000 Gold

One of the first things you’re likely to do when you find yourself in prison in DD2 is speak with one of the patrolling guards. You’ll soon find that they have no intention of letting you out any time soon, at least not without a bit of…persuasion. As you might expect, that “persuasion” comes in the form of a bribe. It’ll cost you 10,000 gold, which you can give directly to the guard if you want to leave prison that way.

The method of paying the bribe to the guard to escape prison is by far the worst, especially since it’s so easy to escape prison in other ways. We don’t recommend doing this unless you have gold coming out of your ears and just want to see what happens.

It’ll cost you 10,000 gold to bribe the guard and be released from gaol.

Use a Gaol Key to Open the Gate

The far cheaper (actually 100% free) method of escaping prison is by using a "Gaol Key" iconGaol Key. You may already have one of these in your inventory as a quest reward, or you might have purchased one from a merchant. Either way, the Gaol Key is one of the few items that you’ll retain when you’re thrown in prison, while all other gear and items will be taken from you. If you happen to have a key, you can just interact with the gaol cell gate and use it to escape.

The downside to this method of escaping prison is that once you’re out of the cell, if the guards see you, they’ll immediately start attacking, only to result in you being thrown back in gaol. You need to run out of the prison as quickly as possible to avoid being overwhelmed by the prison guards and keep running until you’re in a safe place.

Smash the Walls and Escape Through the Sewers

If you don’t want to pay the extortionate bribe and you’d rather not risk being discovered while you escape through the front, there’s another way to escape most prisons in Dragon’s Dogma 2 which involves smashing through the walls of the gaol cell. All you need to do is look around the cell for a section of the wall that looks weaker than the others, usually with a large crack running through it. This indicates a wall that can be smashed through with your bare hands, and it’ll only take a few hits to break through it.

Once you’re on the other side, you’ll most likely find yourself in a sewer system (as is the case in the Vernworth dungeon). You can follow this system as it leads outside, and you’ll be out of prison, albeit in a less convenient location than if you were to run out of the front entrance. Still, it’s the safest and cheapest way to escape, so it’s worth the trouble.

How to Get Your Gear Back After Escaping Prison?

You may be wondering about what happens to your gear and inventory items when you’re thrown in prison, and that’s a good question. We initially thought that players might need to look for a chest within the prison to get their equipment and items back, but it turns out that the system is simpler than that. All you need to do is run out of the prison grounds, and you’ll automatically get all your inventory back when you’re far enough away from the prison. In this way, you don’t need to worry too much about how or where you run out of the prison.
