Dragon's Dogma 2

How To Beat And Decapitate Medusa

By
Echo Apsey

"Medusa" iconMedusa is one of the fabled creatures whispered and talked about in Dragon’s Dogma 2’s lands of Vermund and Battahl. Once you have found Medusa’s location in Dragon’s Dogma 2, you will need to take her on and try and bring an end to her for good.

However, it isn’t the easiest fight in the game as her scaly skin, powerful attacks, and petrifying gaze can easily catch you out. So, we have some key tips and steps to beat Medusa in "Dragon" iconDragon’s Dogma 2 and to decapitate her too. That way you can finish her off for good, hopefully.

Defeating Medusa

Some key tips to beat Medusa in Dragon’s Dogma 2 are:

  • Use the pillars to avoid her petrifying gaze
  • Climb onto her to hit her head
  • Bring "Detoxifying Decoction" iconDetoxifying Decoctions
  • Use spells and ranged attacks where possible

Ideally, you want to be in a class that has some ranged capability. The strength of Medusa’s skin makes it hard to do damage to her body, so with a bow or spells you are able to hit her head more consistently. However, other abilities for some classes like the "Magike Speregonne" iconMagike Speregonne for the "Mystic Spearhand" iconMystic Spearhand do provide some range and are a decent alternative. But an "Archer" iconArcher, "Trickster" iconTrickster, "Magick Archer" iconMagick Archer, or "Sorcerer" iconSorcerer are your best bets for a Vocation.

The main strategy you want to adopt is to climb onto her back or shoot her from afar. There isn’t really much else to the fight or any tricks you can pull off to kill her quickly. If you want to decapitate her, climbing is your only option, but you can read more about that a little further down in this guide.

She has two types of attacks, firstly there is her petrifying gaze which will slowly petrify you and freeze you in place if you stay in her gaze. However, this can be avoided by putting something in between you and her cone of view. She will also use a bow and arrow to fire pools of poison on the ground or walls. This is pretty hard to avoid as they will explode too, but as long as you have a healer and some Detoxifying Decoctions, you shouldn’t lose too much health to the poison.

Upon defeating her, you can grab some materials from her body, open the chest at the back of her lair, grab her bow, and make your way further into your adventure.

Decapitating Medusa

To decapitate Medusa in Dragon’s Dogma 2, you want to be a "Thief" iconThief and use regular blades. It can’t be any weapon with an elemental effect. So, hop back to "Bakbattahl" iconBakbattahl, grab a Thief weapon, and change your Vocation. This is because the slashing damage will allow you to slice through her neck rapidly.

You then want to climb onto her back and slash her head and neck while she is at full health with blades infused with electricity damage. This can easily be done by grabbing a "Mage" iconMage from the nearby Riftstone that has an electricity-casting spell to imbue your weapons with the element. If you are lucky, she will use her petrifying gaze, which allows you to stand on her arched back and slash at her neck really quickly. Otherwise, you will need to grab onto her neck and back and stab it over and over again.

Chances are she will try to throw you off or swing her neck around and launch you into a cliff. If she does do this try to hop back onto her back as soon as possible and continue stabbing. If too much damage is done and she loses a health bar before you have slashed at her neck, restart from the last checkpoint by going back to the menu.

(1 of 2) Be sure to stab Medusa as much as you can before she tries to fling you off as getting back on her is a pain.

By the time she gets down to her second or third health bar, her head should pop off and Medusa will instantly die, allowing you to pick up her head and begin preserving it. Do make sure to take the "Preserved Medusa Head" iconPreserved Medusa Head to storage in Bakbattahl or the "Volcanic Island Camp" iconVolcanic Island Camp though so you can preserve it for 14 days before using it to petrify Medusa’s body for good.

And, if you do happen to miss slicing her head off, rest for 14 days and Medusa will respawn in her cavern for you to kill again. That covers everything you need to know about how to kill and decapitate Medusa in Dragon’s Dogma 2.
