My Time at Sandrock

Pen Romance Guide - My Time at Sandrock

By
Jessica Dillon

Pen is a member of the Church of the Light and protects Matilda. He is the self-proclaimed hero of town and loves himself more than anything. Despite being a joke character, you can still romance him rather easily. Pen is simple to pin down, as he likes items that he can fight with. The guide below goes over where to find Pen, how to romance him, how to marry him, and what gifts he likes and loves.

Pen can be found near the Church of the Light or wandering around Sandrock’s plaza.

Where to Find Pen

Pen is a character that is hard to miss as he’s tall and bulky. He usually wanders around the Church of the Light at the top of Sandrock. When not there, he usually walks down the steps to the main plaza, where he hangs around for short periods of time. Thanks to his flashy outfit, he is easy to spot. "Pen" iconPen has four characters in his network: "Burgess" iconBurgess, "Matilda" iconMatilda, "Dan-bi" iconDan-bi, and "Miguel" iconMiguel. Getting your friendship level up with these characters will also get Pen a boost in Friendship Points. You can also donate to the church once a day for bonus relationship points. The points given are as follows.

  • 20 Gols: +2 Relationship Points with All Church Members.
  • 200 Gols: +5 Relationship Points with All Church Members.
  • 2000 Gols: +20 Relationship Points with All Church Members.

This is a great way to add on some extra points and build everyone associated with the church up at the same time. Most of the characters in Pen’s social network also stay close together, so it’s easy to interact with them all when you go to see Pen each day.

How to Romance Pen

Romancing Pen is available from the start of the game, despite the way he speaks to the character. To build a friendship with Pen, speak with him each day, give him gifts each day, play Critters Spar, and interact with him. Once you reach friend status, you can also go on Play Dates with him. You should note that his personality doesn’t change much over the course of getting to know him. He is one of the easiest characters to build friendship with in the game, as is true with most of the members of the Church of the Light. When you have him at three hearts or 400 friendship points, you can pick up a Heart Knot at the General Store for 128 Gols to give to Pen.

If he accepts it, then he will force you to accept a quest to date him. This is called Simply the Best. This mission takes you into Paradise Lost to fight robots with Pen, and you can accept him as your boyfriend while you are there. As a bonus, this mission unlocks the Love, Sofa, and Robots furniture recipe. This is the only way to get this item in the game, so if you’re a completionist make sure to get close with Pen. How to Marry Pen

Just a reminder that this is a major spoiler that doesn’t happen until around the 50-hour mark of gameplay if you are doing nothing but focusing on the story. This mission we are referring to is Fall from Grace if you have not completed this mission, then the following information will spoil the game.

SpoilerShow Spoiler

Pen can’t be married in My Time at Sandrock and will always reject the Engagement Ring. This isn’t a glitch, as he is revealed to be one of the game’s main two antagonists. When this is revealed, the boyfriend status will be removed from him and can’t be obtained again. After you remove Duvos from Sandrock, Pen will be arrested and removed from town. He can’t return after this, and his info will have a “leave” marker on it from here on out. There is some extra dialogue in the jail when you speak to Pen before you leave if you were dating. This just further proves he’s evil.

Best Gifts to Give Pen

Unlike the rest of the Church of Light, Pen really likes violence. Keep in mind that he dislikes guns and things associated with them. Some of his favorite gifts are weapons and not cheap ones at that. He has a huge list of items he doesn’t like as well, so avoid giving him anything outside of the Likes and Loves listed in the table below.

Until you are able to make weapons at the Forging Machine, you won’t really be able to give Pen gifts he likes. You can easily make up for this by donating to the church each day and playing Critters. Pen also has a few missions that he will drag you into, including one where you make him a new mirror. Once you unlock the ability to make weapons, you can start making Steel weapons, which get you ten Friendship Points each and are easy to make after you reach Gecko Station.

Pens’ favorite items, worth 20 Friendship Points each, are the Alloy Weapons, but they are rather costly to make. You may want to avoid these and focus on working on Pen’s social network to get more points instead. You can also focus on doing commissions for him when they pop up, as the items he requests are usually much easier to make than some of the gifts listed above.

Pen Player Gifts

Like most characters, Pen will still send you gifts when you reach certain levels of friendship with him. Listed below are the items you can expect to receive from Pen in the mail and at what level they will unlock.

Friendship Level Gift
Buddy x1 Budding Broach, x1 Sand Tea Beef
BFF x1 Casual Wristband, x1 Yakboy Target
Boyfriend x8 "Iron Muscle Soup" iconIron Muscle Soup, x1 Motivational Hammer

As you likely guessed from speaking with Pen, he sends you items that he himself likes. You can regift these to him for extra Friendship Points, use them, or sell them at the General Store for extra Gols.
