My Time at Sandrock

Fang Romance Guide - My Time at Sandrock

By
Jessica Dillon

"Fang" iconFang is the mysterious doctor who lives at the very edge of town and is the hardest character to befriend in My Time at Sandrock. Fang will only talk to the player through his bird "X" iconX, doesn’t take gifts, and won’t go on Playdates. In order to unlock these features, players must finish an extremely long quest line that will take hours of their time. The guide below goes over where to find Fang, how to unlock gifting, how to unlock Playdates, how to date him, and what gifts he likes and loves.

Fang can be found at his clinic near the Moisture Farm.

Where to Find Fang

Fang lives on the edge of town at his clinic near the Moisture Farm. He can often be found here, but he does occasionally walk around the perimeter of Sandrock. On Sundays, he can be found in the graveyard, and oftentimes, Fang and X are merged together, making romancing Fang a bit difficult as you really want to catch both characters apart. When X is sitting on Fang’s shoulder, you won’t be able to interact with him anymore. X is the only member of Fang’s social circle, and you will need to become friends with him to help you romance Fang.

Where to Find X

X usually splits off from Fang around 8 am if they are in the clinic. You will also sometimes find X moving on his own in the evenings, but it’s best to go early in order to catch them separately. X and Fang overlap on some gifts, but you will need to learn what both characters like in order to get anywhere fast. Keep in mind that if X is flying close by Fang and you speak to him, X will land back on his shoulder, merging the two.

How to Romance Fang

Romancing Fang is one of the most challenging tasks in Sandrock for quite a few reasons. Starting out, you can only speak with Fang. There are no other interactions you can use to gain Friendship Points. Fang will never attend events, talk about events, have desires, post building commissions, spar, or play Critters. You must unlock the ability to both give Fang gifts and to go on dates with him. The process of getting Friendship Points can be tedious at times and will take hours of your time.

Additionally, Fang’s romance is part of an incredibly long quest line that can take over an in-game year to complete. Even some of his loved gifts are locked behind these quests. In addition, you also need to complete X’s quest Saving Private Raven, where you must build him a bird swing to sit with "CoCo" iconCoCo on. The "Bird Swing" iconBird Swing is also one of Fang’s liked gifts, so it will help get you started once gifting is unlocked.

How to Unlock Gifts For Fang

During your first bit of time romancing Fang, you will be doing medical trials once they unlock. You will need to head to the Clinic every Wednesday and Friday to try a bottle of medicine. This will get you three Friendship Points per trial. If you pick a good medicine, it will unlock in the shop. There are some bad batches, though, that will cause you to turn blue, pass out, or lose health. Once you have spent some time building Fang up, the Cheery Conspiracy quest will unlock. In this, "Arvio" iconArvio pretends to kidnap Fang, and you must wait until the next day and help Fang find X when he comes to your workshop.

(1 of 2) Start befriending Fang by speaking with him daily and taking part in medicine trials.

At the end of this event, Fang will get angry with Arvio and the player. The next day, you should leave your workshop to find X at your door. He will give you a gift for Fang. Take it to him to repair your relationship and unlock the ability to give Fang gifts. Keep in mind that you can still get double points for gifting Fang items on holidays, even though he doesn’t participate in the event.

How to Unlock Hangouts For Fang

Unlocking Hangouts for Fang is much more complicated, as you must go down a series of quests. The first will happen a little bit after you complete Cheery Conspiracy. In this quest, you will need to go to Arvio’s shop to find X arguing with him. From here, X asks you to make one of Fang’s loves "Mapo Tofu" iconMapo Tofu. This item requires you to wait for the Mysterious Man to come into town as he is the only one who can get you two of the dish’s main ingredients. The Mysterious Man comes into town every day on the 20th and 21st of this month. On one of these days, buy "Chili" iconChili, "Broad Bean Seeds" iconBroad Bean Seeds, and Seesai Pepper from him. You will want to get the whole stock. You will also need to pick up Soybeans from "Zeke" iconZeke’s shop at the Moisture Farm. These don’t need to be planted and are ready to cook. This unlocks during the Moisture Farm Blues main quest.

Once this is done, plant the Broad Bean Seeds; they take around four days to grow. Once you have the ingredients together, use your worktable to make Spicy Bean Paste and the "Apprentice Cooking Station" iconApprentice Cooking Station to make the Mapo Tofu. Once it’s done, go to the clinic for another cutscene; it won’t trigger if you just give the item to Fang. At this point, he will pay you 100 Gols for the item and tell you that he will visit to buy one every Wednesday morning to buy another. This will happen for three weeks. On the fourth week, he will give you a Mapo Tofu.

(1 of 3) You will need to make Mapo Tofu for Fang.

A few days after this, you will be taken to Fang by X. Choose to take him back to your workshop. Make sure to start choosing romantic dialogue options. These are marked with a heart. After this quest wraps up, you should find X at your door again a few weeks later for the Relapse quest. During this quest, you have to gather three ingredients to make Cold Medicine for Fang. For this next quest, you must have completed the The Inspector main story quest and have access to the Eufaula Desert area across the bridge. Here, you will need to collect three items: "Heliconia Nail" iconHeliconia Nail, "Hyacinth Orchid" iconHyacinth Orchid, and "Cactus Flower" iconCactus Flower. The table below goes over where you can find them.

Medicine Ingredient Where to Find
"Heliconia Nail" iconHeliconia Nail This can be gathered from Tripions.
"Hyacinth Orchid" iconHyacinth Orchid This can be gathered using an axe from "Hyacinth Orchid" iconHyacinth Orchid bushes.
"Cactus Flower" iconCactus Flower This can be gathered using an axe from Flowering Cactus.

It’s important to note that both the Hyacinth Orchid and Cactus Flower have a low drop rate, so you will need to cut up multiple plants to get them both. All three of these items can be harvested from the area around Gecko Station and the Shipwreck Ruins. Once you have them, head back to the clinic and use the table to make the Cold Medicine. This is one of Fang’s loves and can be made by the player to give to him from here on out.

Once this quest wraps up, you will get Remember the Good Times when X visits your workshop next. This should only take a week at most. This is a bit easier as you simply need to win 50 coins at the Game Center and buy The Eagle in the Valley to give to Fang. The quickest way to do this is by playing Whack-a-mole on normal difficulty. Once you give Fang the book, you will unlock the Leaving the Nest quest a few days later. This is simple: just go with Fang to speak with Zeke, "Catori" iconCatori, and "Cooper" iconCooper. Within the next few days, you should see three blue circles pop up on your map: two at the Blue Moon Saloon and one at the Yakmel Ranch. Go to them to see Fang learning to talk on his own.

(1 of 3) During Relapse you will need to make Cold Medicine from ingredients found in the desert.

The final quest you need to do to unlock hangouts is Eagles in The Oasis. Fang will send you a letter in the mail. During this, you will need to visit Fang at the clinic. He will tell you he wants to hang out. Go with him to the listed places to learn more about his past and select the romantic answer. This will unlock the ability to go on Playdates with Fang.

How to Marry Fang

Before you can date or marry Fang, there is one more quest to complete, Words to Betray the Heart, but it’s hidden. For this quest, buy a Heart Knot for 128 Gols from the "By the Stairs" iconBy the Stairs General Store and give it to Fang. Please note that trying to give it to him before going through his questline will result in rejection. Once you give him the Heart Knot, he will give you a strange answer. The next day, check your mail to find it sent back to you. You will need to find Fang again and give him the Heart Knot.

This will devolve into a possible argument using the kind and understanding answers. At the end, you will need to go to bed for the night. When you wake up the next morning, the final bit of the quest line will play out, and you will be able to date Fang at the end. Once you reach 900 points after activating his second heart meter, you can propose to him with the Engagement Ring. This can also be bought from the Mysterious Man and costs 2,000 Gol. Once you are married, both Fang and X will move in with you.

Best Gifts to Give Fang

Fang doesn’t have a ton of gifts that he wants, and the ones he does are either related to X or medicine. Fang does have a long list of dislikes and hates, so stick to what he likes. The table below goes over all the gifts you can give Fang. Keep in mind that some of these unlock during his questline.

Fang’s top gifts are the "Sand Snake King" iconSand Snake King, "Sandacuda King" iconSandacuda King, and "Horned Adder King" iconHorned Adder King. These are all worth 20 points. Starting, you can focus on giving Fang "Venom" iconVenom and "Yakmel Horn" iconYakmel Horns as they are easy to find. Venom can be obtained from Tripions or through commissions from the Civil Corps. Yakmel Horns are a common drop from defeating "Wild Yakmel" iconWild Yakmels found near your workshop. Once you unlock the Mapo Tofu recipe, you can turn your attention to gifting that in between your other gifts. Keep in mind that you will also want to raise X’s affection towards you as you visit Fang to get his Friendship Points up even quicker. When done right, Fang will have enough points for you to propose by the time you complete his quest line.

Best Gifts to Give X

X has more gifts to choose from than Fang, but the easiest to find are gems. The table below goes over what gifts X likes and loves.

Luckily, X can be given gemstones, including "Bloodstone" iconBloodstone, which can be mined from hard rocks. Bloodstone and "Water" iconWater are solid starter gifts for X, and moving on to the "Fang Special X" iconFang Special X when it’s unlocked at the clinic can help net you several points. Keep in mind that X is a bird, so you can only give him gifts, talk to him, and observe him once the option is unlocked. X does have a small social network outside of Fang, consisting of CoCo and Mort. If you raise their friendship level, then you will gain points with X.

Fang Player Gifts

Fang will send the player gifts as they get closer. Most of these are furniture or items that Fang himself would consider helpful. The table below goes over what gifts Fang sends and when you can expect them.

Friendship Level Gift
Buddy x5 Cactus Seed, x2 "Golden Bell Pill" iconGolden Bell Pill
BFF x5 Beef Noodles, x1 Wooden Bookcase
Boyfriend x2 "Fang Special X" iconFang Special X, x1 Rustic Sofa
Fiance x1 Elegant Flower Box, x1 Elegant Swing

You can either regift these items or sell them for a profit if you don’t want to use them. X doesn’t use the mail system, so don’t expect any mail to come from him. In addition, Fang does still drop off a present for the player’s birthday, despite not participating in most events.
