Monster Hunter Generations

Malfestio

By
Vincent Lau

It is quite the joker.

Areas Start Roam Rest
Jurassic Frontier 4 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9 4
Deserted Island 3 2, 5, 7, 8 3
Primal Forest 3 3, 4, 5, 9 8

Malfestio is a new Bird Wyvern introduced in this game and breaks the mold of the Bird Wyvern class quite a bit, being much closer in anatomy and gait to Flying Wyverns than to its true classification. Malfestio is also far more bird-like than any of the other Bird Wyverns (quite ironic) and as a result can really make use of its impressive wingspan to smack, stun, and add some more oomph to its charges.

Perhaps Malfestio’s biggest gimmick to date is its sheer versatility at statusing the player. It can cause you, the hunter, to fall asleep, which feels pretty run-of-the-mill, but then it can also inflict a new Confusion stats on you if you are exposed to the bright orange powder its wings generate. This reverses your directional controls! Right is left, left is right, forwards is backwards, and backwards is forward! If you find yourself confused and in a pinch, run towards Malfestio and you will run away.

Eating a Bitterbug will snap you out of Confusion. If your Palicos notice and manage to smack you out of it, you will also be cured, but you’ll also be sent flying. And, if you’re patient, it will go away on its own and you will recover your true senses.

Malfestio is weakest to Fire and Water elemental attacks and weapons.

Attack Explanation
Side Chomp When Malfestio performs this attack it’s rather squat and clumsy, so it’s even more harmless than usual.
Wing Smack Malfestio will uppercut you with its massive wings. It does this twice in success, rotating 180 degrees each time. In rage mode, this attack generates orange confusion powder.
Wobble Charge Malfestio will charge forward towars you by running with its little legs. Since it waddles, it will waver from side to side.
Flying Charge Malfestio will fly at you and try to slash you with its talons. This attack in rage mode generates orange confusion powder.
Dive Bomb Malfestio will fly up and then dive bomb at the ground where you are. This will generate a sphere of orange powder around it. Malfestio will then flap its wings to blow it in your direction!
Hypnosis Malfestio will begin to coo and lift up its wings, sending a light blue beam of sound through the air. Malfestio will rotate slightly as it does this to sweep the area in front of it. If you get caught in the beam you’ll fall asleep!
