During the main questline (chapters 1-3) you will encounter twenty unique monsters, with “unique” being a bit generous considering that some monsters, like the Doshaguma and
Guardian Doshaguma and the
Rathalos,
Rathian and
Guardian Rathalos are very similar to each other. Once you reach the post-game (chapters 4-6) the ranks of monsters you can hunt will be reinforced by nine more variants, although one is a repeat of a main story hunt… For a grand total of 29 monsters (two of which can only be hunted once, during the story). If that doesn’t seem like a lot, you’re right! But the game is padded by introducing high-rank and tempered variants of monsters to keep you busy until DLC reinforcements can arrive. This page will explain how to unlock high-rank and tempered monster hunts in
Monster Hunter Wilds, including what unique rewards you get for hunting them!

Complete the main campaign and reach chapter 4, at which point every monster you encounter (large and small) will be replaced by high-rank variants. Essentially if it’s a ★4 or higher hunt, you’re fighting a high-rank monster. In order to fight low-rank variants (everything you encounter in chapters 1-3 will be low rank) you’ll have to replay optional quests by talking to Alma - these will all be ★3 or lower. Below you’ll find a list of all the monsters and whether they are high-rank or low-rank:

High-Rank Monster Rewards¶
High-Ranks monsters offer a wide variety of new rewards compared to their low-rank counterparts. Since every high-rank monster spawns after decorations unlock, they all have a chance to drop them. In addition, high-rank monsters will yield new, high-rank variants of their low-rank materials, which can be used to craft higher-tier arms and armor. For example, a low-rank Rompopolo will drop a
Rompopolo Hide while a high-rank Rompopolo will drop a
Rompopolo Hide+. Their drop tables are almost entirely exclusive, so you will not get low-rank materials from a high-rank monster and vice versa.
(1 of 4) Hunt the Tempered Lala Barina to unlock Tempered monsters.
Tempered Monster Unlocking and Rewards¶
Complete the main quest Thundering Flowers, a ★5 hunt where you’ll be tasked with defeating both a
Guardian Fulgur Anjanath and a Tempered
Lala Barina. After this quest high-rank variants of most monsters will unlock, and these are simply stronger variants of high-rank monsters. Tempered monsters generally do not drop new materials, but yield greater rewards (Hunter Rank and zenny) and have a higher difficulty (★) rating than their high-rank counterparts. The one drop exclusive to tempered monsters are weapons shards, which are used to craft [Artian Weapons], which are noteworthy for being more customizable than standard weapons.
Tempered monsters are notable due to the purple aura surrounding them and the blue colored scoutflies that lead you to them. All high-rank monsters can have tempered variants, with Tempered Arkveld being the most difficult enemy the base game, being a ★8 hunt.
