The final quest of the series of Endemic Research side quests in Monster Hunter Wilds is
Samin’s Special Research Report Quest Guide, where you’ll need to locate and capture the extremely rare
Sandstar. Read on to find out what you need to do to unlock the quest, and where you need to go to find the Sandstar, including tips on how to catch it.
The final Endemic Life quest is given to you by Samin. He’ll ask you to find the elusive Sandstar.
Quest Start¶
As this is the last quest pertaining to Dareel and Samin, you’ll need to have completed all their quests up until this point, which is Dareel’s Research Report, Samin’s Research Report, Dareel’s Research Report Cont, Samin’s Research Report Cont, and Dareel’s Special Research Report. This also means you must have completed story mission 4-3, Wyvern Sparks and Rose Thorns, which is available once you reach HR20. After meeting these requirements, go to Samin in the research tent located in the Windward Plains Base Camp and speak to him. He’ll ask you to find and capture the elusive Sandstar Endemic Life.
Where to Find the Sandstar¶
The Sandstar is native to the Windward Plains, and can only appear when specific conditions are met. These conditions are for the time of day to be Nighttime, and the season to be Plenty. You can change the time and environment by resting at a tent or by using your portable BBQ. Note that using the latter will transport you back to the Base Camp. To make the Sandstar easier to catch, we recommend bringing along some Screamer Pods. Whether you craft them or take them from the
Baunos is up to you. Once you’re prepared, and you’ve set the environment to Nighttime/Plenty, you can make your way over to Area 13.
If you can’t craft the Screamer Pods, you can get them from the Baunos flying above Area 13.
The Sandstar is actually a blue mouse with luminescent fur, which is why the locals mistake it for a star, so keep that in mind when looking for it. It can appear all over Area 13, but we found it more often in the northern part of the area, south of Area 12. Keep your eyes peeled at the sand as this is one quick creature, and if you blink, you could miss it. When you spot it, equip your Screamer Pods and fire it at the creature to temporarily stun it. Quickly equip your Capture Net and scoop it up before it comes to its senses.
The Sandstar will disappear after a short while of chasing it, so if you miss it, you could be waiting a while for it to spawn again. Note that although the Sandstar spawns in Area 13 at Nighttime while the season is Plenty, it’s not guaranteed to appear as it’s a rare spawn. The only thing you can be sure of is the area, time, and season. If you have that correct, you meet every condition for it to spawn, and then you have to pray to the random number gods that it actually does.
(1 of 3) We found that the Sandstar appeared in this area more frequently than anywhere else in Area 13.
This is a frustrating Endemic Life to capture as Area 13 is a large place to cover, then you have the time/season requirement, and finally, you have to capture it before it disappears. With a little bit of luck and perseverance, you will have the elusive creature.
(1 of 2) Once you capture the little rascal, you’ll unlock a new nameplate and an award.

Reward¶
You would think that because this is the last quest in the Endemic Life series, you would get good rewards. Well, you would be wrong, however, you will obtain 5x Wild Herbs, 10
Honey, and 300 Guild Points, but the real prize is the “I Caught a Shooting Star!” trophy/achievement as well as the in-game award for it. This will also give you the “Ribbon Dream: Amber” nameplate. That’s it for Dareel and Samin…for now, but you can be sure that they’ll have more favors to ask of you in the future content updates.
