One of the first monsters you come across while exploring the Windward Plains in Monster Hunter Wilds is the Quematrice. This giant chicken can set cause large explosions and set the ground on fire. The Quematrice can be found in low-rank, high-rank, and in Tempered form. It is one of the rarer low level threats, only coming out during strong Fallow periods.
This guide takes you through the Quematrice’s Ecology, its key weaknesses, rewards you can get from it in low and high rank, and a strategy for how to beat it.
The Quematrice is one of the only fire-damage-dealing monsters in the early game.
Quematrice Ecology¶
Brute Wyverns with disproportionately long tails. They spread a flammable substance which vaporizes quickly, then ignite it by dragging their tales along the ground. By nature, Quematrice rarely hunt their own prey, and instead scavenge herbivore carrion left behind by other predators.

Quematrice Weaknesses and Breakable Parts¶
The Quematrice is particularly weak to Water elemental attacks from any weapons. Quematrice can take huge amounts of damage from water elemental attacks and you can shred wounds and do a lot of damage to its core body parts. Additionally, the most effective status effects are Poison and Paralysis. The full breakdown of weaknesses and resistances is:
Status Effect | Effectiveness |
---|---|
Poison | *** |
Sleep | ** |
Paralysis | *** |
Blastblight | ** |
Stun | ** |
Exhaust | ** |
The higher the number of stars, the stronger and more effective the status effect is. Poison is by far the optimal effect to use because it can real drain the monsters stamina quickly. The next best options is Paralysis are by far the easiest to inflict due to the amount of items and weapons that deal the status effect.
You can also use a Shock Trap, Pitfall Trap, and Flash Pod to trap and blind the Quematrice easily.
The key breakable parts of a Quematrice are its head and tail, with its tail also being severable. You can also target the weak spot on the monster which is its neck. Cutting, blunt, and shot damage are strongest against its head with damage weakening as you move further down its body.

How to defeat Quematrice¶
The Quematrice isn’t particularly complex as a monster. It only has a few attacks, but they can hit hard. Any pecks or swipes with its head can be easily dodged to the side, away from it, or towards it so you are underneath its body.
More often that not, the Quematrice will mix up those attacks with tail swipes or a slam, easily telegraphed by the slight wiggle or movement in the tail. These most often happen when you are to its side or behind it. They can just be dodged by rolling away in the direction of the tail’s movement, so you go out of its reach. Slams can be dodged by simply rolling to the side.
Most attacks from the Quematrice can be easily dodged.
Most of these attacks and pecks can also be blocked easily or countered with an Offset Attack. Additionally, when using these swipes you may see some embers sprinkle out as Quematrice moves to prepare an attack it signals that the attack will be followed up by a fire explosion, leaving the ground burning. For the most part, you can just avoid these in the same way, but keep an eye on the burning ground. Ideally, you want to be on the opposite side of where the embers was sprayed to avoid getting clipped by the attack or fire.
It is key to watch out for embers sparking from the ground.
The only major attack Quematrice has is a large fire attack around itself as it spins twice. This is clearly signaled by a screech and a red glow from the monster briefly to show it is a powerful attack. Ideally roll away as much as possible, or towards it and keep going until you are out of the explosion radius. If you can stay as far away as possible during this attack, you shouldn’t have too many problems.
Beyond that, simply target the tail or head to deal the most damage at all times, only going for limbs and wings when you want to expose a wound.
