Fishing for Flavor is a side quest in Monster Hunter Wilds. This is the follow-up quest of Fishing: Life, In Microcosm, obtained from the fisher, Kanya in Scarlet Forest. Arguably one of the more difficult quests to complete as you’re requested to fish up a Gravid Bowfin, and it can only be found during a specific time and state. Read on to find out where to find the Gravid Bowfin to complete the Fishing for Flavor quest.

The Oasis in Windward Plains is a great place to find the Gravid Bowfin.

Quest Start¶

As mentioned above, you can pick up the quest by speaking to Kanya in Scarlet Forest by the pond of water. However, you will need to have completed the previous quest, Fishing: Life, In Microcosm, as well as completed the story mission, 4-1, New Ecosystems. She will ask you to fish up the rare Gravid Bowfin, the assumed male counterpart of the Vivid Bowfin.

Fast travel to one of the nearby pop-up tents, change the time/weather, and head over to the Oasis.

Gravid Bowfin Location¶

The Gravid Bowfin can be found in any location, but the easiest place to find it is in the Oasis (Area 13) in Windward Plains. However, the Gravid Bowfin will only appear during Dusk or Dawn while the environment is in the Plenty state. Teleport to the Area 13: West or Area 13: Oasis Campsite, and go inside the tent. Go to the fourth tab, called BBQ Menu, and select rest. From the menu, you can change the state of the environment and time of day for 300 Guild Points. Although you can find the fish at dawn, we had better luck at dusk, so change the time to Morning, change the environment to Plenty, and then exit the tent.

Make your way to the water, and pull out your fishing rod. Change the bait to Emerald Jitterbait by pressing + / as the Gravid Bowfin favors that bait, and look for the chunky reddish-orange color fish. With a bit of luck, you should get the fish. If it doesn’t appear there, go to another map and return to “refresh” the fish, as their spawn is 100% guaranteed. Once you have the fish, head back to Kanya in Scarlet Forest to hand over the fish and get your rewards.

Rewards¶

For completing this quest, you’ll be rewarded with 3x Jeweled Mullet Roe (food ingredient), and 5x Honey. You’ll also obtain 100 Guild Points for your troubles. That’s it for this quest, but it won’t be the last you’ll get from Kanya.
