One of the first monsters you find in Monster Hunter Wilds is the Chatacabra. This toad-looking creature roams the Windward Plains and devours its smaller prey. The Chatacabra can be found in low-rank, high-rank, and in Tempered form. It is one of the consistent threats lying within the Windward Plains and for the most part not too tricky to defeat because of its low level.

This guide takes you through the Chatacabra’s Ecology, its key weaknesses, rewards you can get from it in low and high rank, and a strategy for how to beat it.

Chatacabra Ecology¶

Amphibians that use their long tongues to seize and devour prey such as Bulaqchi. Their evolved forelimbs store a sticky mucus-like substance. When agitated, Chatacabra rub their forelimbs against the ground to collect stone and ore, widening the range and destructiveness of their blows.

Chatacabra Weaknesses and Breakable Parts¶

The Chatacabra is particularly weak to Ice and Thunder elemental attacks from weapons. Chatacabra are particularly weak to these and you can shred through parts and open up wounds easily with them. Additionally, the most effective status effects are Poison, Paralysis, and Stun. The full breakdown of weaknesses and resistances is:

The higher the number of stars, the stronger and more effective the status effect is. Paralysis and Stun are by far the easiest to inflict due to the amount of items and weapons that deal the status effect. Poison can also be a great backup option due to the Chatacabra’s amphibious nature.

You can also use a Shock Trap, Pitfall Trap, and Flash Pod to trap and blind the Chatacabra easily.

The key breakable parts of a Chatacabra are its forelegs, with its tongue and head acting as a key weak point. Cutting, slashing, blunt, and shot ammo are most effective weapons against the majority of a Chatacabra’s body. The full breakdown of each monster’s weak point, parts, and elemental weaknesses is:

How to defeat Chatacabra¶

As one of the weakest monsters in the game, the Chatacabra doesn’t have any complex attacks. Many of its tongue swipes, pounds, and attacks can be avoided by simply dodging to the side or away from them. Generally, keeping to the Chatacabra’s rear is the best strategy.

All the Chatacabra’s slams and long wind-up attacks, where the Chatacabra stands on two legs, can be blocked or countered with an Offset Attack. The same can be done for simple side swipes and tongue attacks with good timing.

Beyond those moves, the Chatacabra has a charge that can pin you to a wall and a leap that can deal a lot of damage. Thankfully, both moves are telegraphed very clearly and you have more than enough time do dodge. As the fight progresses, you will weaken and open up wounds in its legs, head, and rear. You can then target these with Focus Attacks for a lot of damage. Repeatedly doing this will cause the Chatacabra’s wounds to be destroyed or body parts to completely break.

If it starts to rub its limbs in the ground and roar, then it is powering up. The main attacks gain a little extra power when this happens, but it does make the parts more susceptible to breaking, allowing you to do a lot of damage if you can target them.
