Background¶
Based on mining, this gym is full of lifts and elevators that make for a curious puzzle, just know that you can run along the girders and you’ll work your way through in no time.
Need to Train?¶
If you need to level up then you can do so either back on Route 5, outside Cold Storage, or in Route 6 to the top left of Driftveil’s main area.
Need Help?¶
In truth, any team should be well equipped to deal with this gym. Being a Ground type gym you are recommended to have a Grass and Water type on hand to sort out this gym. Palpitoads are weak to Grass, but it’s the leader’s Excadrill that is the oddity, weak to the likes of Fighting, Fire, and Water.
Grab a Fresh Water from the info man as per usual. Head forward and click the downward arrow to ride the lift, you’ll be doing a lot of that here. Head to the right and you’ll mee your first trainer…
Trainer Battle 1¶
Head down on this lift then walk up, if you ride this lift up you’ll challenge the trainer here but it’s not an essential scrap.
Trainer Battle 2¶
If you don’t fancy the fight, go upward onto the girder and follow it to the left where you’ll meet…
Trainer Battle 3¶
Pokemon | Level | Type |
---|---|---|
Krokorok | 29 | Ground/Dark |
Ride this lift down, if you want an optional fight then hop onto the lift to the right and ride it up where you’ll encounter a trainer using three strong Pokémon.
Trainer Battle 4¶
If you don’t fancy tackling him then head to the left and the lift above this, ride it up two floors and run along another girder to fight…
Trainer Battle 5¶
Pokemon | Level | Type |
---|---|---|
Drilbur | 29 | Ground |
Ride the final lift all the way to the bottom of the gym and here, in this pretty cavern, you’ll meet the gym leader,
Gym Leader: Clay¶
This fight can be a pain. Krokorok is easy to sort out, simply use your Grass or Water type to send it to its maker. Paliptoad needs a Grass type ideally, thanks to its combination of Ground and Water canceling out the Ground type’s inherent weakness to Water.
Excadrill complicated matters further however. Its primary weakness is that of Water attacks, so exploit this if you can; Fighting attacks will also hurt hard. While Excadrill is weak to Fire, Fire type Pokemon won’t like being hit by its Ground moves.
For beating the old man you will receive the gym badge but unlike any normal gym leader, you’ll not be gifted a TM until you catch up to him. Best get a move on then…
