Hogwarts Legacy

How to Use Stupefy in Hogwarts Legacy

By
Ben Chard

There are many spells to master in Hogwarts Legacy, and Stupefy is one of the first basic spells you’ll obtain. Mastering this spell will go a long way in to ensuring that your Hogwarts adventure doesn’t come to an untimely end.

Stupefy is a powerful tool to counter in Hogwarts Legacy.

Learning Protego and Stupefy

To use Stupefy, you’ll need to first learn how to use Protego, as the two spells go hand-in-hand. Thankfully, you’ll unlock both of these basic spells during the game’s prologue, and you’ll be quickly forced into getting to grips with the spells.

Protego, then, is simply a guard spell, that you’ll want to time using before an enemy strikes you. This is indicated with a orange circle around your character’s head. Be wary of a red circle, as these attacks can’t be guarded against so dodge out of the way of these attacks. The next tutorial will teach you the Stupefy counter.

The Stupefy Counter

As mentioned above, Stupefy is your spell to counter in Hogwarts Legacy, and you’ll access it similar to the way you access Protego. When you see the orange circle, instead of tapping DualSense-ButtonTriangle-Filled/Xbox-ButtonY-Filled, press and hold the button instead and you’ll block the attack and counter. Following this up with Basic spells or other more powerful spells will cause you to do increased damage for a short time.

What’s more, when on all difficulties except hard, the Stupefy counter will break an enemy Shield Charm, making it even more useful. Just like Protego though, you won’t be able to use Stupefy when an enemy is using a red circle attack, this will instead deal damage to you so be sure you’re ready to dodge in these situations instead.

It’s important to master this basic spell, as you’ll need it for the tougher battles and especially on the tougher difficulties where every hit can be deadly. There are also a series of Side Quests you can undertake, the Crossed Wands Quests where you’ll duel against fellow students. In these battles, it’s important to get used to using the Stupefy counter so that you can push your opponent off the table and win the duel.
