Pop-Up Camps Guide - Monster Hunter Wilds

Monster Hunter Wilds is the biggest Monster Hunter game to date, so much so that one centralized base camp just won’t suffice anymore. Each region now has a base camp, but even that’s not enough - tame the wilds, place convenient Pop-Up Camps where they’re most beneficial, and use these vulnerable havens to manage your affairs far from anything that could remotely pass as civilization. This page will cover how to set up and customize Pop-Up Camps in Monster Hunter Wilds!

Page Breakdown

Unlocking Pop-Up Camps

Much of the main questline in Monster Hunter Wilds is on rails, but every time you hunt a few monster (or sometimes even smaller game!) you may unlock new quests.split over several regions and dozens of monsters, you may find hoofing it from base came to be a chore - even if everything goes well! If you faint or need to retreat and resupply, things can get even more hectic. Enter Pop-Up Camps, which serve as a port in the storm - areas where you can access your tent and all the functions that come with it without having to slink all the way back to base camp!

You’ll visit your first Pop-Up Camp in the Forest biome, but you don’t get to set this one up or customize it… yet. Hunt the Congala and return to base camp, where you can talk to the Pop-Up Camp Meowster to get a tutorial about them and the Camping Kit, a tool which will allow you to establish your own Pop-Up Camps.

You’ll unlock Pop-Up Camps after the Congala hunt in the Forest biome.

Setting up Pop-Up Camps

Before you march out into the wilderness ready to dot the land with tents, there are some restrictions when it comes to placing Pop-Up Camps. First, you can only establish Pop-Up Camps in set locations - when you get close your Palico or Hunter will likely comment on it. You must discover these camp locations in person before you can build a camp there, which you can do by using the Camping Kit tool. Alternatively, once you’ve found a campsite (whether you actually established a camp there or not isn’t important) you can also talk to the Support Desk Palico in the region’s base camp and pick the “Manage Pop-Up Camps” option to see exactly where each discovered campsite is and establish or remove Pop-Up Camps as desired. Discovered Pop-Up Camp locations will be marked on your map with a signpost icon, which is another way you can locate them, if you wish. Second, you can only establish so many Pop-Up Camps in a region at a time. This will start out at two per region, but will increase as you complete main quests. Third, you must expend Hunter Rank Points to establish or repair a Pop-Up Camp (although this cost is fairly trivial) and fourth, Pop-Up Camps can be destroyed, albeit temporarily.

Once you’ve set up a Pop-Up Camp, head over there and talk to the Pop-Up Camp Meowster and you’ll be able to customize the furniture outside and the color of the tent itself, if you wish.

Pop-Up Camp Effects

As mentioned earlier, Pop-Up Camps are functionally just tents, but located outside of the safety of base camp, and a tent in a Pop-Up Camp can do most everything a tent in a base camp can do. You can change your equipment, craft, store and restock items, customize your equipment and character, and so on. More importantly, they also serve as respawn points if you faint and fast travel points. They generally just make it easier to get around while providing some features of base camp when you’re in the field, and the ability to mess with items and equipment any time you’re at a base camp isn’t to be taken lightly. Note that however you customize your Pop-Up Camp, its functionally doesn’t improve - anything you place is either cosmetic or interactive in a way that doesn’t affect gameplay.

Keep in mind, however, that Pop-Up Camps aren’t remotely safe and can be destroyed. Your presence there doesn’t affect anything, even if you’re in your tent! We can confirm that we were chilling out in our tent when an angry Rathian destroyed it out of spite, forcefully ejecting us in the process. Suffice to say, you probably don’t want to take breaks from the game when your Hunter is in a Pop-Up Camp - you never know what will come around to ruin your day while you’re not paying attention.

(1 of 3) A Pop-Up Camp will allow you to use the same features as a base camp tent - changing out gear, storing and retrieving items, customizing your armor and character, etc.

Destroyed Pop-Up Camps

Monsters are powerful enough to harm thick-skulled hunters with superhuman abilities, so damaging some hides and fabric assembly by a frankly dubious squad of Palicos isn’t an overwhelming obstacle. Depending on the location, Pop-Up Camps will have various safety levels - Dangerous, Insecure and Safe. The more dangerous the locale, the more likely it’ll be that a random monster will come across it and destroy it, and if they succeed the Pop-Up Camp will not be functional for a while (generally 10:00 minutes, from what we’ve seen). You can just let the time pass and the Pop-Up Camp will be repaired, or you can expend Hunter Rank Points to have it repaired immediately - which might be necessary if you’ve an urgent need to travel to said Pop-Up Camp.

Generally this isn’t a huge issue, so you should prioritize Pop-Up Camps based on their proximity to monsters and points of interest, but if you can get one close enough in a much safer location… well, a Pop-Up Camp isn’t much good if it spends most of its time nonfunctional!
