Barrier is an incredibly useful for Materia and is necessary for a lot of the tougher battles in the game such as Leviathan where you need to limit the damage from an Ultimate attack. This is another strong contender to use paired with your Magnify Materia and is suggested when taking on the final Shinra Combat Sim.
