What is INTERmission?

By
Ben Chard

This page contains all of the details on the PS5 version of Final Fantasy VII Remake INTERmission, the new story chapters in the Intergrade release.

INTERmission is the new story DLC featuring Yuffie Kisaragi, the Wutai Ninja.

How to Start INTERmission

INTERmission is the main feature of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade. It features brand new gameplay and areas that takes place in Midgar during the middle part of Final Fantasy VII Remake. The story takes place across two Chapters, which can then be completed on Hard mode once you complete it for the first time.

In order to start INTERmission, you’ll need access to Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, which is a PS5 exclusive. This is available as a free upgrade for PS4 owners although you must purchase INTERmission separately. If you purchase the Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade package, be it physical or digital, it will come with the INTERmission DLC. Once you have this installed, simply press the R2 button to switch the menu to the INTERmission menu. Save data will be different to the main game.

Who are the characters?

You’ll be in direct control of Yuffie Kisaragi, a ninja from Wutai as she infilitrates Midgar to locate and steal the ultimate Materia from Shinra. She fights with her shuriken that can be used at both close and long range, while employing Ninjutsu to coat her weapon with elemental properties.

You’ll also be joined by Sonon Kusakabe, a brand new character to Final Fantasy VII Remake who fights with a staff. He acts as a guest character, in that you can never switch control to him but can synergize with Yuffie to perform deadly combo attacks, a brand new system to Final Fantasy VII Remake.

New Materia

There are new Materia to track down and use in INTERmission, including the addition of a brand new Summon Materia. With new Summon Materia, comes a new battle against said Summon which will provide a strong challenge for all players.

Fort Condor Mini-Game

Fans of the original Final Fantasy VII may fondly remember the events at Fort Condor, where you’re tasked with defending a Phoenix’s egg on the top of the mountain while Shinra attack. This played out in a mini-game that saw you place troops on a top-down map to prevent the march of the Shinra forces.

This mini-game has been modernized for the Remake where you can access it and comes with many new features. You’ll be able to use Materia to impact your troops, gain new units via Side Quests and even new boards that will alter the way each game will play out. There are of course many rewards awaiting you should you master this game and you’ll find all of the information you need here.

Shinra Box Buster

Another new mini-game exclusive to INTERmission, you’ll gain access to Shinra Box Buster in Chapter 2 of the story. This is a mini-game that plays similarly to the Whack-a-box mini-game in the base game with a few differences. Not only is there two difficulty modes, but there is a whole host of materia to obtain and a Trophy, you can find out more here.

New Superboss in the base game

Once you complete the story in INTERmission, there will be a new superboss battle available in the Combat Simulator found in Chapter 16, this will test your full knowledge of the battle system and everything that you’ve learnt throughout the base game and INTERmission, details on how to defeat this boss can be found here.
