How to Romance Halsin in Baldur's Gate 3

By
Scott Peers

Halsin becomes available as a companion in Baldur’s Gate 3 a bit later in the main story than most other characters, but the wait may be worthwhile for those who are partial to erotic bear scenes. You won’t be able to properly romance Halsin until Act 3, but if you don’t want to wait that long you can still romance someone else in the meantime, since Halsin is open to polyamory. If that isn’t your thing, you can just finish things with the character you’ve been romancing up until that point if you wish. Either way, you’ll need to build your approval with Halsin by doing things in the world that he appreciates, and there are a few key choices that you’ll need to make if you want to secure Halsin as soon as possible. On this page, we’ll take you through how to romance Halsin as quickly as possible with all that in mind.

Guide to Romancing Halsin in Baldur’s Gate 3.

How to Recruit Halsin in Act 2 of BG3

The process of recruiting Halsin in Baldur’s Gate 3 is a lengthier process than it is for most other characters. You won’t be able to do it properly until you reach Act 2 of the main story, and even then there are a few things you need to get right to make sure he joins you permanently. The most important thing that you need to do during Act 1 is protect the Emerald Grove from the cult of the Absolute, ensuring that you protect both the Tieflings and the !Druids. If you kill Kagha before Halsin returns to the grove, you can still pursue his story without becoming hostile, but he won’t be happy with your actions.

So, the best thing you can do is leave Kagha alone (although you can still save Arabella, the Tiefling child who she tries to imprison), and prioritize saving the Tieflings by defeating the goblin leaders at the goblin camp. Incidentally, this is also where you’ll find Halsin for the first time, and you can read more about this on our How to Rescue and Recruit Halsin in Baldur’s Gate 3 page.

How to Build Approval With Halsin in Baldur’s Gate 3

As mentioned above, the key thing that you need to do during Act 1 of the main story if you want to build approval with Halsin, is ensure the protection of the Emerald Grove and the rescue of the Tiefling refugees. The only way to reliably do this is to defeat the goblin leaders at the goblin camp, then return to the grove and speak with Halsin there. It goes without saying that you’ll need to make sure he doesn’t die during the prison break from the goblin camp, so it’s a good idea to make a manual save when you reach the area. You can then reload and try again without losing too much progress if you fail to keep him alive.

Assuming you’ve done everything right in relation to protecting the Emerald Grove, once you make it back there you can speak with Halsin at your camp, where a celebration will be taking place. Here you’ll have some flirtatious dialogue options, but although Halsin may be receptive to your advances, he’ll state that his mind is focused on lifting the Shadow Curse in the Shadow-Cursed Lands for now, which you’ll do during Act 2. Until then, Halsin will remain in your camp and you won’t be able to recruit him as a permanent companion.

Complete the Wake Up Art Cullagh Quest in Act 2

Once you’ve made it to Act 2 in the Shadow-Cursed Lands, you’ll be able to start the Wake Up Art Cullagh quest from the "Last Light Inn" iconLast Light Inn. If you want to recruit Halsin as soon as possible so that you can begin building approval with him, you should prioritize this quest. It’ll soon lead to a subsequent related quest in which you’re able to lift the Shadow Curse from the lands, and at this point Halsin will become available as a permanent member of your party. You’ll need to chuck someone out first, then recruit and take him along with you on your adventures.

Now that you have Halsin in your party, you can begin building approval with him by acting in a way that he appreciates. You can do this in different ways, but there are broad principles that Halsin will approve of. In many ways, Halsin is the most unambiguously “good” companion that you’ll have access to. He primarily approves of you doing the following things:

  • Show a reverence and respect for nature
  • Be generous to those in need
  • Help innocent creatures
  • Be honest, avoid lying and trickery

The vast majority of your interactions will have some options in line with the above principles, so you should be able to discern what to go for when the moment arises. It’s also important to note that Halsin distrusts most other deities who exert control and demand sacrifices from others, especially those which delight in darkness, such as Shar. For this reason he won’t necessarily be the best of friends with "Shadowheart" iconShadowheart, but as her path progresses you can actually bring them closer together if you make the right choices. In our playthrough, we were even able to sustain a polyamorous relationship with both Halsin and Shadowheart, even after they had been bickering through most of the events of Act 2.

You should have plenty of opportunities to do the right thing while Halsin is in your group. Any act which hastens the destruction of the cult of the Absolute, without engaging in your Illithid powers and while showing no mercy to those who are consumed by the cult, will be approved by Halsin. With that said, he won’t relish in you inflicting any unnecessary suffering on others, even if they’re enemies, so it’s probably a good idea to ignore the cruel suggestions that might come from characters such as "Astarion" iconAstarion and "Lae'zel" iconLae’zel.

How to Sleep With Halsin in BG3

If you follow the principles established above, it won’t be long before you see an exclamation mark appear above Halsin’s head in your camp. This could happen towards the end of Act 2, but if you haven’t been resting enough between events in the main story, it may not happen until near the beginning of Act 3. The most crucial thing to do is make sure that you lift the shadow curse by following his companion quests as soon as possible.

Halsin Dialogue Choices

When you first speak with Halsin about your potential romance, there are a few key lines of dialogue that you’ll need to get right. We’ve detailed these below, with the correct replies. Note that there are some variables in the replies which can lead to the same outcome, but we tested the ones below for guaranteed success.

Halsin: “…I was forgetting who I was, but you lifted the fog. Thank you.“
- Reply: “You’re welcome.”

Halsin: “I have lived a very long time. I have taken many lovers. My heart does not stir lightly. But it does now.”
- Reply: “Many lovers? Perhaps your heart stirs more easily than you think.”

Halsin: “But tell me I’m wrong, and the matter can rest. I do not wish to sour our friendship, but I have to know if I can be something more.”
- Reply: “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t interested - but I’m already in a relationship.”

At this point we had to say that we’ll speak with our current lover, but after that we were able to pursue a relationship with both. If you prefer, you can choose to tell Halsin that you only want him. Either way, the options from here are obvious and you should be able to establish a relationship from this point, since he’s opening up to you.
