This page offers a guide on Thisobald Thorm, one of the Thorm family members that can be found scattered around the Shadowlands in Baldur’s Gate 3. You’ll find information and advice on how to succeed all dialogue checks in order to defeat him without combat. We’ll also give some advice on how to fight him should you choose to/fail your checks!
Where to Find Thisbald Thorm¶
Thisobald Thorm is found at The Waning Moon Tavern. From Moonrise Towers waypoint, head west to find the tavern. Inside you’ll trigger a cutscene with Thisobald Thorm, who’s currently tending the bar…
How to Succeed all Dialogue Checks with Thisobald Thorm¶
Before you speak with him, we recommend using a party member with high Charisma, as you’re going to need to succeed on a bunch of checks. High Constitution and/or Dexterity can also help, but having high constitution and charisma isn’t that common in a character build. Instead we recommend using ability check/saving throw modifiers, like Guidance which gives +1d4 to an ability check or saving throw. Plus having lots of extra Inspiration rerolls can help with rerolling fails. And, if all else fails and you really don’t want to fight him, there’s always save scumming!
When you speak with Thisobald, he’ll demand that you drink with him, if you don’t then you’ll have to fight him (see below for some combat tips!).
Each time you drink, you can either pretend to drink (sleight of hand check) or actually drink the poisonous drink (Constitution saving throw). Naturally, you’ll want to make sure to pick the one that suits your character’s stats, some classes/races also get advantage on certain saving throws so make sure to keep that in mind too! The first check is either a DC14 constitution saving throw or a DC14 Sleight of Hand check.
Next, after drinking and succeeding on your chosen throw, you’ll have to perform a story for him. You’ll get a choice from a variety of different tales to sing but all will have the same DC16 Charisma Performance check! When we used a Warlock we got the option to do a Persuasion check so different classes and races will have some different options it seems.
After succeeding on one drink and one song of glory, you’ll need to do all this again! This time, however, the checks are much higher and you’ll need to either get a DC18 on a Constitution Saving Throw or a Sleight of Hand Dexerity Check. Here’s where it might be good to use some buffing cantrips or spells (see the option “Add Bonus” at the bottom of the screen to browse options within your party). Guidance is great because it will also last more than one check too!
After succeeding on another drink, you guessed it, you have to tell another tale! Again, the difficulty has gone up and you’re going to have to pass a DC18 Charisma Performance Check. And after successfully telling your tale, you are now free to ask him questions about the Shadowlands curse and how he became so gross. And then finally, you’ll need to do one last Constitution Saving Throw or Sleight of Hand Dexterity Check to drink again.
You can now loot his body for a key which will open up the metal door behind him. Here you can learn the recipe for Thisobald’s Brewed-Up Bellyglummer. In the chest in the far corner of the room, you’ll also find the weapon Punch-Drunk Bastard - a rare bludgeoning Greatclub that gives you advantage on attack rolls and creates a blast with each attack that deals 1-4 Thunder Damage for 3m…but only if you’re drunk! Time to roleplay a drunkard? A chest near the entrance also contains Ichorous Gloves. If worn, when the wearer deals acid damage, they’ll also inflict noxious fumes upon the target.
How to Beat Thisobald Thorm in Combat¶
Sometimes the Dice Gods are cruel and we don’t get the rolls we need to succeed on a check. The bad news is, any check you fail and can’t retry during this dialogue exchange will result in Thisobald becoming hostile and attacking you. And, in addition to fighting Thisobald, you’ll need to fight all the Blighted ads around The Waning Moon tavern.
Thisobald Thorm has the Numb condition and this causes him to be immune to Slashing, Piercing, Bludgeoning and Thunder Damage! This will effectively make your fighters pretty useless, unless they have weapons with additional damage types like fire, ice, psychic etc. You may find it more useful to blast Thisobald with powerful high-leveled spells to batter him down quickly. You should be careful not to use too much fire damage on him as the barrel on his back will set on fire and he’ll be able to perform a really devastating fiery belch attack called Burning Reflux. If you have used fire damage on him, you can other damage types like water, poison or ice to cool the barrel back down again.
In addition to being numb, after one turn of combat he begins to develop conditions relating to his drunkness (he’ll start shouting about being too drunk). After a few turns his “Profoundly Intoxicated” condition will turn to “Blacked Out”. During this Blacked Out phase, he’ll have a -5 penalty to his Armor Class and is vulnerable (double damage) to !Slashing, !Piercing, Bludgeoning and !Thunder Damage. This will only last one turn and he’ll be back to being numb, but during this turn you should take every advantage to do as much damage to him with your fighters (and thunder damage spells!) as possible. You should be able to defeat him in one or two turns once he’s blacked out so long as you’ve been damaging him with alternative damages prior to this.
Once you’ve defeated him, you’ll be able to loot him for the same things as if he just explodes from the drinking session.
