Baldur's Gate 3

Baldur's Gate 3 - How to Steal the Sacred Idol

By
Nathan Garvin

The Idol of Sylvanus is an object of great reverence for the druids of the Emerald Grove, and of great foreboding for the tiefling refugees seeking sanctuary in the grove. It’s currently being used as the focus for the Rite of Thorns, which, when complete, will expel the tieflings from the relative safety of the grove and cast them out to face the bloodthirsty goblins which infest the ruins to the east. No wonder, then, that the tieflings have stolen it before, and some conspire to do so again. This page will provide a walkthrough for the quest "Steal the Sacred Idol" iconSteal the Sacred Idol in Baldur’s Gate 3, including information about finding Mol in The Hideout as well as step-by-step instructions for pulling off the heist.

(1 of 2) To find The Hideout, you’ll need to talk to a tiefling boy named Doni

How to Start the Steal the Sacred Idol Quest in Baldur’s Gate 3 - Where to Find Mol and The Hideaway

First things first, you need to actually start this quest, which can take a bit of doing. The easiest method is to simply talk to a mute tiefling child named Doni, who is standing near some oxen, just north of Arron, a druid trader. This interaction is a bit odd, as it’ll take you two chats to get what you want out of Doni, and he’ll run off between each encounter. Talk to him and pick the option “Turn around to see what he’s looking at”, which will prompt a [Perception 10] check. If you pass, you can perform a follow-up [Investigation 10] check to find a concealed entrance, but you can’t open it yet. If you fail the initial Perception check… it doesn’t really matter, as you need to come back, anyways.

Succeed or fail, you’ll need to speak with Doni again, but alas, he’s run off. You need to get him to spawn, and you can do this by fast traveling to the "Overgrown Ruins" iconOvergrown Ruins and walking back to the grove from here. With luck, you’ll find Doni back at his usual haunt near the oxen. Talk to him again and pass an [Insight 10] check followed by a [Persuasion 10] check or a ["Detect Thoughts" iconDetect Thoughts 10] check and he’ll show you the concealed entrance (if he hasn’t already). Even better, he’ll show you how to open it, which will get you access to show you how to open it. Failing that you can explore to the east of the druid grove to find a tiefling boy being entranced by harpies near the beach, which is the subject of the quest ["Investigate the Beach" iconInvestigate the Beach]. Should you save the boy, Mirkon, he’ll tell you to tell Doni about seeing the “Dragon’s Lair”, which is an easier way to get Doni to show you the entrance to the Hideout.

(1 of 4) You can earn the trust of the tiefling kids by rescuing Anabella from Kagha,

It’s not enough to merely gain access to The Hideout, however - you need to help the tiefling kids out around town, and there are a few ways to do it:

  • Rescue Mirkon during the quest [Investigate the Beach].
  • Catch Silfy pick pocketing you and let her go - this is covered in depth on the page Find Your Belongings.
  • Convince Kagha to let Arabella go, which is basically the entirety of the quest "Save Arabella" iconSave Arabella.

However you manage it, once you’ve earned a good reputation among the tiefling kids and managed to get inside The Hideout, seek out a tiefling kid named Mol. After mentioning your act that earned you their goodwill, you can pick the dialog option “Thought you might need help with something.”. This will finally start the quest Steal the Sacred Idol.

How to Steal the Sacred Idol in Baldur’s Gate 3

Despite how straight-forward this all seems, it’s currently quite difficult to steal the idol. If you have access to spells like "Fog Cloud" iconFog Cloud, "Darkness" iconDarkness or "Invisibility" iconInvisibility you could just obscure the area near the idol or turn the would-be thief invisible, which will allow you to steal the idol, but doing so will just turn the druids hostile to all “outsiders” - you included. That being the case, you should complete the subquest Investigate Kagha, which is covered in detail on the linked page. Once you complete that, the ritual will be stopped and the druids will be both less focused on the idol, and less prone to violent outbursts in the case of its absence. Only when that is done can you really steal the idol without massive repercussions.

Compared to the bother of actually starting this quest and getting things into a suitable state for your heist, the deed itself is actually fairly straightforward, especially if you’ve done some pick-pocketing before. If not, here are some quick pointers:

  • You must hide before stealing something (press the “c” button).
  • When you attempt to hide you cannot be in any NPC’s line of sight, and you must remain outside their line of sight, otherwise you’ll need to make a Stealth check to stay hidden. An enemy’s line of sight will be marked by a red effect on the ground.
  • After you steal something, you must quickly vacate the premises, as the guards will start pestering suspicious individuals (that’s you).

(1 of 5) Hide on the stairs, enter turn-based mode, then sneak up to the left side of the idol,

Head over to the Sacred Pool area just outside the Emerald Grove - it’s pretty easy to spot the Idol of Sylvanus, as it’s atop some stairs in the middle of a pool surrounded by chanting druids and swirling green energy. Now that the ritual has been halted, you shouldn’t have a line of sight on the stairs, If some druid or wandering animal is still playing spoiler, you can hit the area with one of the aforementioned obscuring spells, or make the thief invisible via the spell of the same name, with a potion, or a class ability, depending on what you have access to. That shouldn’t be necessary, however. In any event, interacting with the idol can still be wonky and the druids aren’t completely blind, so this is what worked for us (no spells or items, only hiding with "Astarion" iconAstarion):

  • "Hide" iconHide on the stairs leading up to the idol, it can be tricky to actually hide adjacent to it.
  • Enter turn-based mode (shift + alt), then walk up to the left side of the idol. Make sure you don’t get spotted - if you succeed at Stealth checks, you’re fine.
  • Don’t click on the idol directly, instead, click and drag it down to the ground. The game will try to make your character walk to the right side of the idol if you just try and pocket it, which will likely get you spotted.
  • Immediately after moving it to the ground, pick it up and leave the area.
  • If you get caught by a druid as you leave, you’ll have to pass a [Deception 15] or [Intimidation 15] check.

(1 of 2) The Idol of Sylvanus will give you the Sylvanus’ Blessing boon, giving all nearby characters Proficiency in Nature and Handle Animal,

The Idol of Sylvanus will give you the Sylvanus’ Blessing boon, giving all nearby characters Proficiency in Nature and Handle Animal, (left), while if you give the idol to Mol, she’ll reward you with a Ring of Protection +1. (right)

Whew. With the idol in hand, all you have to do is return to The Hideout and talk to Mol, but you should note that there’s a passive bonus being applied to the thief and any characters nearby. This boon, Silvanus’ Blessing, gives every character affected Proficiency in both Nature and Animal Handling. Honestly not a bad buff, and you get to keep it so long as the Idol of Sylvanus is in your inventory. It only weighs 0.2lbs, too, so it’s not exactly a backbreaking labor to lug it around. If you give the Idol of Sylvanus to Mol, you’ll lose this boon, but you’ll be rewarded with a "Ring of Protection" iconRing of Protection +1, which gives its wearer a sweet +1 bonus to Armor Class and Saving Throws while equipped.

Finally, if you give the Idol of Sylvanus to Mol and side with the druids and tieflings by killing the goblins, you can actually steal the Idol of Sylvanus back from Mol before the tieflings depart for Baldur’s Gate. Return to the druid grove and find Mol - you’ll know you’re close when the idol’s effect pops up. Pick pocket the item off her and you get bot the Ring of Protection and the Idol of Sylvanus, although there’s no telling how Mol will react if you meet up in Baldur’s Gate.

Whether you give the Idol of Sylvanus to Mol or keep it for yourself, this quest is done. Check out the following pages for other quests in Baldur’s Gate 3:
